Illidan Stormrage was just revealed as Hearthstone’s next playable hero but players might get a lot more of him with the potential re-release of The Burning Crusade in the Classic version of World of Warcraft.

WoW Classic

World of Warcraft is easily the most popular game in the history of the Massively Multiplayer Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) genre. Throughout the years, it has seen eight massive expansions and countless patches to the point where the original design of the game was completely revamped... and lost.

The fans demanded a way to play the original, old-school version of their favorite game and Blizzard obliged by releasing WoW Classic in August 2019. This special server comes in addition to the “normal” game mode and offers a way for players to experience only the core content and play to a maximum level of 60.

We are not prepared… or maybe we are?

Recently, a select number of WoW Classic players received a peculiar poll, probing potential interest in a Burning Crusade server, using the game’s first expansion released all the way back in 2007.

The Burning Crusade was a smash hit and vastly increased the game’s subscriber numbers.

It added the Draenei and Blood Elf races as well as the iconic villain Illidan Stormrage, freed for his 10,000 years of imprisonment.

Looks like Blizzard is seriously considering reintroducing the cult expansion into the WoW Classic program. The company also seems to be debating as to how to do so – by letting players continue to expand on their Classic characters, or by creating brand-new ones.

With news like these, it’s fair to assume that the Burning Crusade is well on its way, probably followed by Wrath of the Lich King – historically the game’s most popular expansion.

The developers of World of Warcraft have always cited EverQuest as the game’s main inspiration. EverQuest has a system called Progression servers, in which the player would go through the history of the game, starting with the “vanilla” base game and progressing through the content of the expansions in order of their release.
