First, there are many settings that tweak the gameplay before you start a match and can change how the murder mystery game will be played. There can be one to three Impostors in any given game and a full lobby typically plays with two Impostors, but it really is up to the person who created the lobby or your playgroups' preferences.

It should be said that the Impostor is much harder to play than the Crewmate, but it is arguably much more fun. The Impostor simply has more options available to them as they have two extra in-game abilities: Kill and Sabotage. They can also report like other Crewmates if you chose to do so. Let’s take a look at a few tips and tricks for Impostors and Crewmates.

Basic game knowledge is needed to play both the Impostor and the Crewmate effectively. It's very important to be able to explain yourself to the other players in order to provide yourself with a plausible alibi or quickly escape down a vent after a kill.

Know The Rooms And Tasks

Remember the name of the task so you can claim where and what you did in the room. Here is a list of all the tasks on Skeld:

  • Inspect Sample
  • Fix Wiring
  • Fuel Engines
  • Empty Garbage
  • Empty Chute
  • Calibrate Distributor
  • Chart Course
  • Align Engine Output
  • Clear Asteroids
  • Clean O2 Filter
  • Divert Power
  • Stabilize Steering
  • Prime Shields
  • Submit Scan
  • Start Reactor
  • Unlock Manifolds
  • Swipe Card
  • Upload Data

Just like with the tasks, knowing the names of the rooms allows for easier communication and thus easier deception during the comms meeting.

Know All Escape Vent Locations and Paths

As Impostor, be aware of your surroundings at all times and never risk jumping into a vent if a player is nearby. Here is a map with the vent access points on Skeld and where they lead. If you are the Impostor, each vent will be highlighted by a red border.

As Impostor, Don't Kill At The Start

It is hard to fight the urge to spam that kill button as Impostor because it’s so fun. Do not worry – you will get the chance to press it a lot more if you wait for the right moment.

Therefore, at the start of a match, do not kill too quickly! Let the Crewmates spread out and lose track of who is where, letting them freely complete tasks.

As Crewmate, Do Your Tasks In Pairs

As Crewmate, a buddy system is a good and simple way to safely move throughout the spaceship. The Impostor can’t kill you both, but if you are playing with more than one killer, then beware if two or more assassins come running towards you.

To counter this, avoid other pairs of players and keep in mind that the Impostor has a cooldown on their kill button.

Don't Push For A Vote Too Early

Remember: if you act based on weak evidence, the odds are against you. Most games only have 1 or 2 Impostors and if you vote off a Crewmate, you send them into deadly space, ending their life aboard the ship.

This is a free kill for the Impostor(s), so skip the vote when there is little to no proof on who killed whom.

As Impostor, if you pressure your lobby to vote for another player, this often backfires on you because everyone will suspect your aggression or they might just pick you at random. Let other players do the talking and if everyone is unsure, follow along.

How To Handle Sabotages In Among Us

As Impostor, you can sabotage several parts of the ship; the most serious ones on Skeld are the Reactor Meltdowns and O2 Emergencies. Use these when there are fewer players left as it forces people to split up and you can then set your trap.

When a person is alone trying to fix the problem, you can kill them. If you sabotage something too soon, it can be easily fixed and will quickly alert multiple players.

As Crewmate, be proactive when it comes to fixing the sabotage event; if you wait for another Crewmate to do it, it may be too late. Waiting until the last moment only gives the Impostor the chance to set up their trap and kill you.

If no one completes the sabotaged task, sometimes the game will end depending on the severity of the sabotage.

Among Us: As Impostor, Always Act Like A Crewmate

The most important goal as Impostor is to always behave in a way that no one every thinks it could be you. Stick to fake doing tasks by going into the rooms and standing beside the task consoles. Remember which tasks have visual cues and in general, avoid faking these.

If you see an isolated player, follow them but do not kill them. Hopefully, they can be used as an alibi. Buddy up with someone but don’t kill your buddy as he is your alibi.

As Crewmate, Use The Security Cameras

Knowledge is power! Inside the Admin room, you can use the security cameras and a map will appear and show the locations of all players currently on the map.

If you monitor who goes into a room, it may also lead you to find out who the killer is, and act as a key piece of evidence when you accuse someone during the open chat meeting.
