Ranking Every Weapon From The CoD: Vanguard Alpha

1-12

I smell nerfs coming - especially for number 1

Jon Ramuz Jon Ramuz
Call of Duty - August 28th 2021, 18:30 GMT+2
Vanguard Weapon 3 Line Rifle

12. 3-Line Rifle ($1500) - A terrible, terrible optic. And too slow. Unless we can sub that sight out at some point then this thing is never going to compete (in the beta you could sort of pack-a-punch weapons but you couldn't choose what attachments you got). | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons Auto Loading Shotgun

11. Auto-Loading Shotgun ($700) - It's a 5 round auto-shotgun; it was never going to be number one. Even for what it is, it's an underperformer though. At one point I was within 4m of an enemy and got three good chests shots in, but they still got me with the Thompson. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons 1911

10. 1911 (Free) - A classic, and with a healthy enough stopping power to be worth pulling for up close. But it is the base sidearm at the end of the day so it wasn't going to get much higher on the list. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons Machine Pistol

9. Machine Pistol (Free) - Odd they didn't call this one the Mauser (copyright on the name has long since expired so it's not a licensing issue), but hey ho, it's good. It's really good for a sidearm actually, expect this to be the go to secondary in multiplayer. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons DP28

8. DP27 ($1500) - Its slow, which is normal for an LMG, but it doesn't have the TTK to make up for that sluggishness. It isn't terrible but there are better options. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapon Revolving Shotgun

7. Revolving Shotgun ($700) - This puppy has a punishingly long reload time, but wow, I found it to be the far more reliable shotgun of the two. As a shotgun it will always be niche, but this could be Vanguard's Streetsweeper. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons MP 40

6. MP40 (Free) - Not the shredder I was expecting but a more than reliable bit of kit, and with decent range for an SMG. The irons are poor but that's no issue when you've got CQC optics as nice as the one pictured. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons BAR

5. BAR ($500) - This wins second place for its optic. I've mentioned the quality of optics quite a bit so far but that was the really stunning part of this playtest - some of these are laughably modern. The one pictured is basically a VLK from MW 2019 with some dust on the glass. But hey, it makes the BAR fantastic - it's only downside is that it's a touch on the slower side. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons STG 44

4. STG44 ($500) - The M4 of Vanguard - write that down. It's the generalist option; its got good range, it's fairly controllable, it has a good damage profile and a strong rate of fire. It misses out on a top three position only because it didn't wow me like the next guns did, but if you're just looking for a familiar feeling AR then look no further. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons Kar98k

3. Kar98k ($1500) - One of the nicest optics Ive ever seen in a Call of Duty game. Seriously, this thing is going to jump to meta in Warzone, perhaps even ahead of the MW 2019 Kar98k already in the game. It was snappy and powerful, and as I've made clear, the sight was a pleasure to work with. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons M1928

2. M1928 (Free) - This was such a forgiving weapon; it has a high rate of fire, massive mag capacity, and it barely moves when you're firing. Perhaps it did especially well because Champion Hill was always relatively close-quarters but I have a hard time not seeing this being an instant hit with the fanbase. | © Activision Blizzard

Vanguard Weapons MG42

1. MG42 ($1200) - The one weapon I would say is crying out for a nerf. This is like the MG82 was on launch. It has a ridiculously high rate of fire, it's way too easy to control, and the damage profile makes the TTK filthy. Sure its an LMG so its going to be slow, but not slow enough to compensate. And with the map being so destructible this thing can really flourish. Could Vanguard be ushering in a new era of LMG dominance? This LMG certainly had me guessing. | © Activision Blizzard

The Call of Duty: Vanguard alpha has begun (August 27 at the time of writing). We’ll be providing full coverage over the weekend for those who are either on Xbox, PC or didn’t prepare an excuse for their loved ones. In this gallery, we'll rank every weapon available in the Call of Duty: Vanguard alpha, there are some serious guns to watch out for this weekend.

In the one playable mode from the Call of Duty: Vanguard alpha, Champion Hill, you start in a social hub with just a pistol. There are buy stations in the hub where you can purchase weapons between rounds. The idea is that you get steadily more impressive weapons so that the final teams who make it to the final rounds go in with the best gear. But what is the best gear? What should you buy and what should you avoid?

Keeping your ear to the ground with this playtest? Then you've come to the right place, here are some of our recent articles:

  • The CoD: Vanguard Alpha - How Does Champion Hill Work?
  • The CoD: Vanguard Alpha - How Strict Is The SBMM In Vanguard?
  • The CoD: Vanguard Alpha - How Do The Weapons Feel?

In Champion Hill, the social hub buy station will have one shotgun, one SMG, one assault rifle, one LMG, and one sniper rifle available for purchase. But there are two different boxes that can spawn in the social hub at the beginning of the match. The two boxes have different weapons for each class. Which allowed us to see two different examples of weapons from the full game for each class.

What are your thoughts on the alpha? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter, and remember, you should consider joining MyEarlyGame today for exclusive tourneys and loads of great giveaways!
