Sci-Fi movies often get overlooked, but this one is just criminally underrated!
Some of the best stories ever told in theaters, never got a sequel. Not necessarily because they bombed, but simply because the story wrapped up perfectly! One of these cases is Edge of Tomorrow, although with this one they are trying to come up with a sequel, but somehow just can't get it done.
Edge of Tomorrow is a nice action flick starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt that is set in a futuristic world, where humanity has to battle aliens for survival. Directed by Doug Liman, the movie is based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
Throughout the movie, we follow Tom Cruise's character Major William Cage who got caught in a time loop that resets every time he dies. The story revolves around, Cage trying to find a way to use this time loop to safe humanity. In the beginning he sure struggles to even survive on the battlefield, but with the help of Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a legendary soldier and fellow time looper, he becomes the ultimate killing machine.
Edge of Tomorrow 2: Will The Sci-Fi Groundhog Day Finally Get Its Sequel?
Even though Edge of Tomorrow wasn't regarded as a success at the box office, only making $370 million globally on a $178 budget, the movie was well received overall.
If you take a look at the audience score by sites like metacritic, it even beats the likes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Despite this, news regarding a sequel were rare, until, back in 2019, when Hollywood Reporter, reported that Edge of Tomorrow 2 was in development.
Whereas normally the Hollywood Reporter is quite credible, it seems like this time they kind of sh*t the bed, because almost 10 years after the initial movie's release, there's still no news about the sequel.
In an interview with Deadline, Emily Blunt addressed this involuntary hiatus, stating how she would love to be part of a sequel.
Well, I would love to do another one. I don’t know when and I don’t know how, but I would love it. [...] I would love to work with Doug [Liman] again. It’s like we have to create something as ambitious as the first one. How much more mileage can we get out of a repeating day? What’s the new construct?
So the reason there is no sequel yet is that they don't really know how to write a satisfying continuation of the story. Makes sense. The first movie kind of finishes with a perfect conclusion to the main conflict of the movie, and the concept of the time loop also would need a new angle to make a sequel valid.
That's pretty difficult, so maybe we will have to wait a little longer for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel (if it happens at all), but once they are able to solve those problems and provide the sequel with a satisfactory script, we're looking forward to Edge of Tomorrow 2.
Adaptations can be good, but most are absolute sh*t. Edge of Tomorrow might be the only good manga adaptation out there, and people have low hopes for this new Harry Potter adaptation:
