Even after 20 years, fans are still eagerly waiting for any news regarding Firefly season 2, and apparently Disney plans to make their wish come true.
Firefly was one of the most iconic series of the early 2000s, but despite it having become somewhat of a fan favorite in the sci-fi genre, a sequel of Joss Whedon's sci-fi western was never really in the cards. Now, with the acquisition of 20th Century Fox, by Disney, new rumors surrounding Firefly season 2 started to surface.
If you need a quick recap, Firefly is a space-western TV show following Captain Malcolm Reynolds, as he leads a diverse crew on a spaceship called Serenity.
They travel through space, taking on various jobs to earn money, some legal and some not, as they are simply trying to survive and make a living. The universe is controlled by a powerful central government, which the crew often tries to avoid (for obvious reasons).
Throughout their adventures, the series touches on themes of friendship, freedom, and the struggle between right and wrong, which is really where the biggest appeal for the show lies. Despite its short run, it gained a passionate fan base and is known for its unique mix of genres and witty dialogue.
Firefly Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
Most of the hardcore fans probably know that Firefly was canceled after the first season, because it didn't really manage to attract a larger audience during its original release.
Much of the show's success came afterward, thanks to DvD and streaming, which is also the reason fans are now more hopeful than ever that Firefly might finally get a season 2.
Why? Because in 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox who had the rights to the franchise, which sparked rumors about Disney being interested in rebooting the series.
While this would likely indicate them switching up the cast, adapting the story from the first season all over again, if successful, this could make the eagerly awaited season 2 for Firefly more likely than ever!
Still, those are just rumors, but looking at how much time has passed since the original show got canceled, a reboot is the most likely chance for fans to finally get a season 2 for the beloved sci-fi western.
