Is Netflix planning to expand their adaptation game with a new entry to their catalogue? Rumors say that a Dark Souls Anime is next on Netflix's list of adaptations. What's up with that?
Netflix, for all its faults, has proven to be quite gifted when it comes to one thing: animated video game adaptations. Maybe they want to keep the hype going after Arcane and Castlevania? At least that's what rumors suggest.
The Dark Souls trilogy by FromSoftware with its merciless enemies and deep (and I mean deep) lore could actually make a really good basis for an Anime adaptation. Netflix has proven with Castlevania that they got the gritty, dark vibe down that Dark Souls got to it, so that actually does sound good!
Is A Dark Soul Anime In The Works At Netflix?
It is – according to GiantFreakinRobot, at least. They claim to have "exclusively learned that Netflix is working on a Dark Souls anime series based on one of the greatest video games ever made."
They further report that the anime series will cover the events of the first game. The events in my first game actually started with lots of frustration, so maybe get ready for two episodes worth of "getting past the first enemy until I get my bearings and figure out that panic-rolling isn't the way to go" – that would be a faithful adaption!
But jokes aside for a second: the deep lore of Dark Souls actually would be perfect for an adaptation. We got the story that's basically skippable in the game, but still absolutely worth it once you get into it, we got side characters with their own arcs and stories to tell, and most importantly, we have a curse to break. Perfect premise, right?
I'd be on board with animated Lordran and I admit, I can see really see it: Anime-Fashion-Souls, Anime-Stray-Demon, Anime-Moonlight-Butterfly? Yeah, sign me the heck up! If that turns out to be true, I'm gonna be the first one to bust out the old trusty trilogy and yeet myself back into the dark medieval fantasy to hype myself up accordingly.
But I gotta be realistic here for a second: Dark Souls is basically dead, first of all. Elden Ring took everything that made the Dark Souls series great and made it even better, so it would make more sense to concentrate on that, if anything.
Another thing to keep in mind is the actual source. The rumor comes from GiantFreakinRobot and they don't have the best track record, exactly. According to a moderator at reddit's r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers they flat out banned them as a source as they are "notoriously bullsh*t." Ouch.
If the rumors turn out to be true: good for us! We'll keep you posted on that.
