Netflix knocks it out of the park with animes lately: Devil May Cry is next on the list! Here's all the info you need to hype yourself up for the upcoming release, including an estimation when it'll come out, a little sneak peek of how it'll look and even more!
Video game adaptations have been working out quite well for Netflix, so let's get another one out there, shall we? With Devil May Cry, Netflix got working on adapting another beloved franchise. The video game by Capcom has had a huge fanbase for over twenty years by now.
No need to worry, though: the first look we got seems quite promising. We got the iconic white-haired Dante, the protagonist in the games and he seems as cocky as ever. But when will the new anime hit our screens?
Devil May Cry Anime On Netflix | Release Estimation & Teaser
At the Drop 01 showcase event, Netflix shared a first look of what's to come: "sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck," according to the logline.
See for yourself, though:
Granted, 44 seconds is not exactly the world and there's no telling where or when the story might take place, but one thing's for sure: they got Dante's cockiness down to a T, which certainly is a step in the right direction!
We also didn't get an official release date just yet, but with Netflix announcing Devil May Cry would be "coming soon" in their teaser, speculations are that the new anime will hit the streaming service in 2024.
It's going to be eight episodes, written by Alex Larsen with the help of Adi Shankar as creator, executive producer and showrunner. Yes, that Adi Shankar: the genius that also gave us Castlevania on Netflix. He's already proven himself to have what it takes to bring beloved video game franchises to streaming services, and he doesn't seem to slow down any time soon:
I'm honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the DEVIL MAY CRY franchise. Alex Larsen and I love these characters, we are part of the fandom, and vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves.
If that isn't a promising statement, I don't know what is. Larsen and Shankar will be joined by Hideaki Itsuno from Capcom and Seung Wook Lee from Studio MIR as executive producers to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Devil May Cry's Roots And Old Anime
Fans of the franchise surely remember: there already is an anime following Dante and his endeavours. Ready to feel old yet, though? The anime is from 2007. That's over 15 years ago, so getting a new show is long overdue!
Back then, each episode featured a standalone-story with Dante taking on a new mission, either battling demons, solving mysteries or protecting the innocent from evil forces, all the while being his over-confident self we all know and love.
The one thing besides Dante that makes Devil May Cry the beloved franchise that it is, is the over-the-top action. Dante doesn't only fight demons, he does so with style – sword and guns a-blazin', jumping around like only half-demons can. Seems perfect for another anime adaptation!
Chances are we'll see new versions of old characters aside from Dante as well, including Vergil, Lady and Trish. It remains to be seen if the Netflix adaptation will take the old approach with self-contained stories outside of the games or if it'll take inspiration from a variety of games to choose from and tell an old story in a new way.
Pretty sure about one thing, though: there's gonna be lots of demons and Dante's gonna kick their asses into next week in true Devil May Cry fashion. We'll make sure to keep you posted as soon as there's further news!
