The latest trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is here and takes us back to Hogwarts for the first time since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
The latest trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is one crazy son-of-a-gun. Featuring Mas Mikkelsen as Grindelwald, formerly played by Johnny Depp (before he was displaced due to variation allegations levelled against him), this latest Harry Potter film has an even bigger star up its sleeve: Hogwarts. As the name suggests, The Secrets of Dumbledore will also feature the return of fan-favorites Dumbledore, Newt Scamander, and Jacob.
One of the biggest failings of the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been the lack of connection that fans have felt towards its characters. It will be interesting to see how the follow up to 2018's The Crimes of Grindelwald will address this reality, though the fact that Jude Law's Albus Dumbledore with take center place is a positive sign. Honestly, there is little for us to say if you haven't seen the trailer yet.
That's where we come in, here's how this article's going to work: we're going to give you the trailer, then we're going to dive further into what we can see and what it could mean for the film. It does look like, for the first time since 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Hogwarts is going to be featured prominently in this film. That could end up for the better or for the worst, but what we can say, however, is that Mads Mikkelsen looks right in his element here. Take a look:
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Returns to Hogwarts
From the opening shot of that new trailer, it has been made plainly clear that we will be returning to Hogwarts in the third Fantastic Beasts film. This is surely a good thing, though it does raise a few questions about the fact that the film will not only cover the wizarding world during World War 2, but will introduce us to wizarding enclaves in Germany, Bhutan, and other places around the globe. It seems like an awful lot to fit into a single movie, especially if they want to give us the character development we have all craved for since the start of this spin-off series.
There's more to discuss, as well, seeing as this is one action-packed trailer. It is very clear that Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will likely be more of what we got in the first two films. A lot of great action set pieces, some great visuals, and that quirky Newt Scamander we've grown to love from Eddie Redmayne. What more could we ask for, after all? We're just hoping that our gut is right on this one and that Fantastic Beasts 3 will give both Dumbledore and Hogwarts the love that they deserve. I mean, honestly, guys, please?
When can we see Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore?
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will release in theaters on April 15, 2022. As usual, its screenplay was written by J.K. Rowling, who has been in a bit of trouble recently due to some remarks deemed "transphobic" by members of the Harry Potter community. We're not going to comment on the matter other than to stay that Rowling's creative work stands parallel and separate to her personal views, and that no matter what she said, we can still enjoy (and will enjoy) content from the Harry Potter franchise.
It's also pretty apparent that the franchise is in no risk of disappearing. With a new Harry Potter video game coming out relatively soon (which we will get to see more of this week!), last year's 20th anniversary HBO Max Special, and this-here film keeping Rowling's wizarding world well and truly alive. Whatever your thoughts, it will be interesting to see how The Secrets of Dumbledore moves the franchise forward or whether – like its predecessor, Crimes of Grindelwald – it will say very little and remain an enjoyable, but rather forgettable, entry in the franchise.
