Mortal Kombat 2 is now officially in development and as the cast is set to return to Australia for filming, we got some further insights on what characters could possibly make an appearance in the sequel.

The Mortal Kombat franchise is a popular fighting game series known for its intense battles and unique characters.

Developed by NetherRealm Studios, it always features a diverse roster of fighters from different realms who engage in a tournament, trying to murder each other with odd creativity.

With its brutal fatalities and iconic catchphrases, Mortal Kombat has become a beloved franchise in the realm of video games, movies, and pop culture.

Now Warner Bros. plans to expand on the movie they already released with a sequel that is now officially in production

Mortal Kombat Sequel Starts Filming In Australia

It seems like it is Mortal Kombat season right now, as not only did we get a first glimpse at the newest game, but also the official confirmation that filming for the sequel of the movie is about to begin.

In an official press release, James Wan (who runs the production company that spearheads the project), dropped the filming location:

I’m so proud that Atomic Monster is able to bring the filming of Mortal Kombat 2 to Australia. I’m thrilled that with the help of Screen Australia and Screen Queensland, we can show off the majestic locations of Queensland and work with the top-notch artistic talent based there.

With the Mortal Kombat sequel heading to Australia, this begs the question, who is going to be in the movie?

Mortal Kombat 2: Which Cast Members Will Return For The Sequel?

Looking at the original cast of the movie, we are sure that most of them will make their return. We're pretty sure, Simon McQuoid will return as director, as he already envisioned a sequel when he directed the first movie.

For the rest of the cast here's a short list of who we think will make a return:

  • Lewis Tan (Cole Young)
  • Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade)
  • Ludi Lin (Liu Kang)
  • Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero/???)
  • Chin Han (Shang Tsung)
  • Mehcad Brooks (Jax)
  • Tadanobu Asano (Raiden)
  • Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion)

Okay so let us explain this list. Cole Young is a character that was introduced purely for the movies. Whether he will appear in the new Mortal Kombat game is a different story, but we're sure creating this character for the movies has some purpose, so we expect him to return for the sequel.

As for the rest of the returning cast, it is highly likely that they will return, as they're absolute fan favorites that would have people go apeshit, if they weren't included.

So let's talk about the elephant in the room. Joe Taslim. While Sub-Zero has pretty evidently been “finished” in the original movie, we might see him return in a different form, as the iconic Noob Saibot.

Then there's also these two that might just join the cast for the sequel:

  • Karl Urban (Jonny Cage)
  • Tati Gabrielle (Jade)

Okay, so the post-credit scene already teased Johnny Cage's appearance in the sequel, but who could possibly play this iconic character? Seems like Karl Urban is one of the most likely candidate for the job, according to early reports.

Personally I would have loved to see a young Jean-Claude Van Damme picking up the character, but the guy is just too old now... Maybe he could have a guest appearance as Johnny's “teacher”, though.

There's also a report by Hollywood Reporter on Tati Gabrielle playing Jade in the upcoming sequel, which would be pretty much perfect casting.

Looking at all the video game adaptations we're getting at the moment is pretty exciting:
