Why Peter Jackson Wanted To Erase LotR From His Mind

Peter Jackson has spoken passionately about how much he wants to erase LotR from his mind so that he can watch it again with fresh eyes. But this goes far deeper than you might think, he's considering hypnosis...

By Ilúvatar! Why would Peter Jackson want to erase the greatest story ever told from his memory? Has Melkor sewn discord in his mind?! No. Fear not, dear reader, he wants to have LotR erased so that he can rewatch the films and re-read the books with fresh eyes. Wouldn't we all? Imagine enjoying the beauties of the shire, or the majesty of Rivendell anew.

But this wouldn't be news if he just stated that obvious fact. What makes it bizarre is the lengths that Peter Jackson is willing to go to. He's been considering hypnosis, a specific type that can help you forget things in your memory. Usually, this is used for painful memories (as in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but in Peter's case, he wants to forget something beautiful. And no doubt if the Rings of Power turns out to be terrible, I'll be contacting his hypnotist (although, it looks promising by all accounts).

Peter Jackson Consults With Hypnotherapist To Erase LotR

In a recent episode of the Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter" podcast, Peter Jackson shared his struggles with being unable to enjoy LotR from a viewer's perspective, and claimed to have consulted with a hypnotherapist. He said the following:

It was such a loss for me not to be able to experience them like everyone else was, that I actually did seriously consider going to a … hypnotherapy guy and to hypnotize me, to make me forget about the films and forget about the work I’d done over the last six or seven years, so at least I could sit and enjoy them.

Sorry, Peter. I wish it was possible, not just for you, but for all of us. Sadly, we can only enjoy it for the first-time once. We can still enjoy it afterwards, but it will never be the same.

Is this just nonsense or do you believe a hypnotist could achieve it? Either way, I find the image of Peter Jackson learning about LotR for the first time hilarious. Imagine if his first introduction was via the new Gollum game...
