The Squid Game universe has only just begun - says Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Yes, 'universe'. What's happening here? We know. Read on.
Surprise, surprise, Netflix's most popular show ever, will get a second season? Who would've thought? One thing that stands out about this, though, is the fact that Squid Game is now being referred to as a 'universe', and, if you're anything like me, the term 'universe' in association with moving pictures has you thinking Marvel. Now, with that in mind, I'm sitting here, writing and think, 'wtf... how is that gonna work with Squid Game?' Well, I found out, and you're about to:
"The Squid Game Universe Has Just Begun"
Netflix bossman Ted Sarandos recently sat down with Variety, and confirmed that Squid Game season 2 is coming. Granted, we all expected as much, after the show broke every Netflix record and its creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk already confirmed a season 3... Anyway, we're gonna let Ted have his moment in the sun.
What we want to focus on is his wording: "The Squid Game universe has just begun." It's a very specific choice of words, and he elaborated on it by pointing to the potential for live experience games, and merchandise and by comparing it to Stranger Things.
Now... I don't know if you are one of the 300 million people that watched Squid Game, but I am, and... I don't see how there is huge potential for a universe here. You either re-hash the same thing over and over, or turn it into a super lame story of, spoiler-alert, someone trying to stop and disband the criminal organization behind the Squid Games, spoiler-alert-over.
I doubt Sarandos has Marvel-esque plans in mind here, but then again, you never know. Look no further than Fast & Furious for an example of how something simple can escalate into something supernatural...
Currently, there is no release date for Squid Game season 2, only an announcement, but it's a safe bet to expect it in 2023.
