The Last of Us is celebrating its 10-year-anniversary in 2023. Can you believe that this game is already so old? It holds up so well in current times, especially in terms of graphics and story. No game comes close to the impact The Last of Us has had.

Now, it's finally receiving its own television series and it seems that HBO went all-in with this one with a budget that even surpasses its main breadwinner Game of Thrones.

HBO Reportedly Spent Over a Hundred Million Dollars

HBO's The Last of Us Series is set to release on January 15, 2023 on HBO and HBO Max. Many are wondering whether this is the show to finally break the video game adaptation curse and bring something for both dedicated fans, as well as casual viewers to the plate.

In a report by The New Yorker, it was revealed that HBO went all-in for this project, with a budget that surpassed most of the Game of Thrones season. The first season of The Last of Us had a bigger budged than all first five Game of Thrones seasons and we all know that GoT was HBO's OG cash cow.

An exact number wasn't revealed by The New Yorker, but they did state that it was upwards of a hundred million dollars. With such an investment the show has to be good, right? Well, with The Last of Us creator, Neil Druckmann working on it, fans should expect a very accurate adaptation. Alongside Druckmann is Craig Mazin who is known for his work on Chernobyl, which was another well-received show.

With these names at the helm, fans have pretty high expectations. The series will also have to bring in new viewers though, and pull in casuals who have never even heard of the Playstation games, something other video game adaptations haven't been able to truly do.

On January 15, 2023 we will see just how well done this huge project was and whether we're going to get multiple seasons of Ellie and Joel.
