Horizon Forbidden West might just be one of the most anticipated games of 2022. After the tremendous success that was Horizon Zero Dawn, the sequel will feature a new story, a new area and characters, as well as gameplay mechanics and, of course, new machines for you to fight against. And this is what we want to talk about today.

Through a PlayStation blog post, we now have more insights into the new machines that will be in Forbidden West.

All Machines in Horizon Forbidden West

Returning Machines From Horizon Zero Dawn

  • Watcher
  • Ravager
  • Charger
  • Snapmaw
  • Stormbird
  • Tallneck
  • Thunderjaw

New Machines in Horizon Forbidden West

  • Bristleback
  • Burrower
  • Clawstrider
  • Shellsnapper
  • Sunwing
  • Tremortusk
  • Unnamed Plesiosaur-like Machine

These are all the confirmed machines for Horizon Forbidden West so far. Horizon Zero Dawn had over 25 machines when it released, and so far, Forbidden West has "only" 14 (13 if you don't count the one that doesn't have a name yet, but was shown in the trailer). So I'd say it's safe to assume that we'll get a couple more.

The blog post also gave details on two of the new machines, the Sunwing and the Tremortusk. Both are very interesting creatures that could potentially be a huge challenge to take on in the game (and when I say potential, I mean that for some... I know I'll die to both of them multiple times).

[...] we knew we wanted a slightly bigger flying machine than the Glinthawk, which resulted in the Sunwing – but it needed a place and a role in the world. We studied various flying reptiles and primitive birds for inspiration, and came up with the concept of their wings collecting solar energy during sunny weather. This in turn created an interesting gameplay dynamic: Sunwings will be vulnerable when they are harvesting solar power, but are also more alert to potential predators when they are idle

Seems like we’ll need to plan our attacks even more than in the previous game, which adds a lot to the gameplay. It won’t just be about pinning down a machine and shooting them with explosive arrows until they won’t get up anymore.

As for the Tremortusk – the one you can see in the picture above – Asset Art Lead Maxim Fleury said the following:

The Tremortusk is based on a mammoth with a nod to the historic and cinematic examples of the great war elephants. It has many different attacks and a body covered in various guns. Apart from using its tusks to attack up close, it also has different elemental weapons it can use. The one we see in the trailer is controlled by a rebel faction of the Tenakth, but you can also find them wandering the wilds

Now, it sounds a lot better than it looks... I'm already crapping my pants and don't think I'll fight this beast. I'll just run the other way when I see it.

Horizon Forbidden West will release early 2022, so I hope you're ready to fight some more machines. I know I won't be.
