In Diablo 4, the Tree of Whispers offers unique challenges and rewards to players in the endgame. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
Having a fun and engaging endgame is extremely important for a game like Diablo 4. The developers at Blizzard introduced a few new mechanics to make sure players get enough fun things and good loot in this part of the game. One of them is the Tree of Whispers.
The Tree of Whispers is one of the coolest and most rewarding endgame activities in Diablo 4. Once you’re done with the campaign, engaging with this system will be the best way to improve your gear. In this guide, we will show you everything you need to know about the Tree of Whispers.
Diablo 4 Tree of Whispers Explained
Players encounter the Tree of Whispers in Act 5 of the campaign. It’s located in the north-east corner of Hawezar and is a giant, mysterious tree, featuring talking heads hanging from it.
Once you’re done with the campaign, you automatically get a Priority Quest that will send you to speak with the tree. It will ask you to gather Grim Favors, which you can in turn in for rewards.
How To Earn Grim Favors
You earn Grim Favors by completing objectives called Whispers in the open world of Sanctuary. But note: You can’t hold more than ten Grim Favors at once.

Here are all kinds of Whispers and how many Grim Favors you get for each of them:
Whisper Objective | Grim Favor Amount |
Cellars | 1 Grim Favor |
Defeat Enemies | 1 Grim Favor |
Events | 1 Grim Favor |
Find Corpses | 1 Grim Favor |
Extract Seeds of Hatred | 3 Grim Favors |
Invoke Rituals | 3 Grim Favors |
Legion Events | 3 Grim Favors |
Harvest Enemy Resources | 3 Grim Favor |
Dungeons | 5 Grim Favors |
(PvP) Boss Kill | 5 Grim Favors |
World Boss Kill | 5 Grim Favors |
Our tip: Go to the Fields of Hatred in the Dry Steppes and do the extraction tasks, if you get that one marked as a Whisper. You’ll literally just need to kill one mob and bring the seeds it drops to an altar. Voila – three Grim Favors. Easy enough.
Clearing dungeons takes a bit longer but also earns you five Grim Favors per pop. So just do two dungeons and you’ll be at the cap. Otherwise, you can never go wrong with a Cellar. It’s only one Favor, but they’re extremely short and can be done quickly.
Tree of Whispers Rewards – Which Reward Cache You Should Pick
Once you collected ten Grim Favors, come back to the tree. The Tree will now offer three reward caches. They are sorted by item category. The caches include weapons, armor pieces, gems and can even include Nightmare Sigils.
Which cache you should pick depends on what type of gear you want to improve. Looking for better boots? A stronger weapon? A new top? Go for whichever armor type is highlighted. Sometimes you get lucky and get a cache which guarantees a legendary item – you should obviously go for that one, if you can.
