Sony is ramping up the benefits for PlayStation Plus Premium members by introducing cloud streaming for the PS5 this month. A feature that their main competitor, Microsoft's Xbox, has implemented for their Game Pass users for more than two years now.
PS Plus Premium Members Are Finally Getting Cloud Streaming This Month
For those wondering what Cloud Streaming is, here's a short definition: Cloud streaming in video games is a technology that allows players to stream and play video games over the internet without the need for high-end gaming hardware or extensive downloads
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hideaki Nishino, SVP of Platform Experience at Sony, shared the company's plans to launch cloud streaming on the PS5 throughout October. Here are the release dates we know so far:
- Japan: October 17
- Europe: October 23
- North America: October 30
PS5 Cloud Streaming: What Games Can You Play?
Premium tier subscribers will gain access to streaming some of the most popular PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus catalog, including titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, among others.
Premium members will also be able to stream games available in the Game Trials catalog and stream digital PS5 titles from their game library, such as Resident Evil 4 and Dead Island 2.
PS5 Cloud Streaming: Streaming Quality
The blog post details that players will have four resolution options to choose from: 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolution, with a smooth 60 frames per second and SDR or HDR output. However, to experience these games at the highest resolution, you'll need a minimum internet speed of 38mbps or more.
This announcement comes after Sony's August beta test, which allowed select members to stream certain PS5 games at up to 4K resolution.
These updates to PlayStation Plus come about a year after Sony introduced significant changes to the service, creating multiple tiers and offering new perks, including the option to play retro games from past PlayStation consoles and access time trials of certain games through the Premium membership tier.
Sony hope, that with this move, more players will opt for PS Plus Premium. Hopefully, their cloud streaming is good. Because paying $160 per year for PS Plus Premium is a good amount of cash.
