Looking for Remnant 2's best class? You're in the right place. We've created a Tier List for you, ranking every class/Archetype in Remnant 2 for both solo play and co-op play.
Remnant 2 is awesome, and it features some very enjoyable to play classes (or "Archetypes" as the game officially calls them). But, this being a difficult game, it naturally attracts powergamers who will only ever want to play Remnant 2's "best class". So, what is the best class in Remnant 2?
You can find our answer to that question below. We've provided a tier-list of all Remnant 2 classes for solo play and for co-op play, as well as a brief explanation to begin on each of the classes.
Remnant 2 Classes
If you're brand-new to Remnant 2 you can find a brief overview of each of the classes here. But please bear in mind, in Remnant 2 you can only pick from four classes at first, and the other six you have to unlock later in the campaign.
Class/Archetype | Icon | Overview | Difficulty (1-3) |
Challenger (Available from the start) | The pure melee class. Great...but only within 10 metres. For this reason struggles a bit weak for solo play, but can work well as part of a group. | 2
Handler (Available from the start) | A basic gunmen with a pet dog to control. A fun class, and good for solo (especially thanks to the dog's revive), but the damage isn't great. | 1
Hunter (Available from the start) | The sniper (basically). Okay at solo play because you can play safely from further back, but much better as part of a group. | 1
Medic (Available from the start) | The healer, but unlike in other games, Remnant 2's medic has good damage output and survivability as well. Fantastic in a group. | 2
Alchemist (Requires unlock) | The Alchemist is a master of potions who is focused on buffing allies. A little underwhelming, honestly. | 3
Engineer (Requires unlock) | One of the most fun classes. This is the heavy gunner, with a machine gun that can also be set up as a turret. Surprisingly good for solo-play. | 1
Explorer (Requires unlock) | Not combat focused. This class is all about finding more and better loot. A good class for completionists. | 2
Gunslinger (Requires unlock) | This is your classic "soldier" figure. Really simple to understand, very accessible/familiar gameplay, and so well-balanced that it's clearly the best class for solo-play. | 1
Invader (Requires unlock) | High risk, high reward. This is the very fast, very difficult, agility-based melee fighter. | 3
Summoner (Requires unlock) | This class can summon some helpers, including Flyers, which have range. It's definitely a fun class, but it's on the weaker side. | 3 |
Remnant 2 Best Class: Tier-Ranking All Classes For Solo Play
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Solo Play: S-Tier
Gunslinger (S-Tier)
The Gunslinger is the cowboy of Remnant 2. And they are AMAZING. It's no wonder that Gunfire Games included this class as a pre-order bonus...
So what makes the Gunslinger so good? They have a balanced enough kit to be solid in the defense and movement departments, but they really shine when it comes to damage. Gunslingers can just keep chipping away at the boss's health, shot after shot, without having to put themselves in much danger. And so they are excellent for solo play.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Solo Play: A-Tier
Invader (A-Tier)
The Invader will not be to everyone's taste, it's the assassin/dexterity-focused melee fighter. And they rely a lot on decoys and trickery.
We have the Invader rated so highly because if you can master this class (and that's a big if; it's probably the hardest class in Remnant 2) you will be heavily rewarded. The Invader can dance and pivot around the enemy and is also capable of some great damage.
Medic (A-Tier)
The medic doesn't need much explanation, it's in the name.
However, unlike other games, this medic can shoot back, which gives the class a great combination of survivability and usefulness for solo play. We could probably justify S-Tier, but we'll keep them in A for now because they can only reach their full potential in co-op play.
Handler (A-Tier)
The Handler is basically a soldier with a pet dog that can be used to attack but also revive you.
The Handler is great for solo play precisely because they can rely on the dog to take some aggro and to revive. This is also a great class to start with in the game, however, the damage struggles to compete with other classes in the more difficult sections of the game.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Solo Play: B-Tier
Challenger (B-Tier)
Your classic knight. Well, it's Remnant, so the dude also has a shotgun. But you get the picture: This is the close-range class.
We like the Challenger a lot and if this was a tier-list based on fun the Challenger would be right up at the top. That said, they struggle in solo play because they are so narrowly-focused, and some bosses are very difficult to take on solo with the limited range the Challenger has.
Engineer (B-Tier)
The Engineer is a very simple and fun class that uses a heavy machine gun, which can also be set up as a turret.
This class is quite slow, and for solo play the Engineer will struggle against fast melee units, but the big machine gun has jaw-dropping DPS and the survivability is very respectable. Here's a guide on finding the Engineer for you.
Hunter (B-Tier)
This is the sniper character. And so you can probably guess exactly how it plays.
Being able to attack enemies from such a safe distance is pretty massive for solo-play, and that alone will get you through some difficult encounters. However, the Hunter really does feel squishy when the enemies get too close and so we can't justify giving it more than a B for solo play.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Solo Play: C-Tier
Alchemist (C-Tier)
This will probably be the least popular class. The Alchemist is all about creating concoctions to buff allies.
As you can expect, when your whole kit is focused on working with your teammates, you won't be hitting your full potential in solo-play. There's really almost no reason to play this class if you aren't into co-op (but we still rate it more highly than the Explorer).
Summoner (C-Tier)
The Summoner does exactly what you would expect. They can produce melee and ranged-based summons, who will attack enemies for you.
We really wanted to love this class, and on paper it should be good for solo play in the same way that the Handler is. But it's just not very good. The summons don't put out near enough damage to compete with other classes, and they can't act as a meat shield for very long either.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Solo Play: D-Tier
Explorer (D-Tier)
This is not a combat-focused class, instead it's all about finding resources and accessing hidden treasures.
We simply can't rate the Explorer much higher than D-Tier because this is a tier-list based on the power of each class, and the Explorer brings almost nothing to a fight that other classes can't.
Remnant 2 Best Class: Tier-Ranking All Classes For Co-Op Play
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Co-Op: S-Tier
Medic (S-Tier)
It should come as no surprise that the healer is great for co-op, this class is literally built to support.
And god-damn can the Medic heal. By the time you have Redemption unlocked at Level 10 you can literally keep your whole squad in the fight. Before long your mates will be begging you to bring the Medic along.
Engineer (S-Tier)
Maybe we need to come back and review this one after a few months, but we were absolutely blown away by the Engineer when used in co-op.
If you have other players around you who can deal with the mobs and offer some healing, then you can sit back and get the machine gun singing. We found that our damage output as a combined group went up by so much when we included an Engineer in the party, and for that reason we simply have to put them in S-Tier. The Engineer also offers some defensive buffs to allies as well, which is a lovely little bonus.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Co-Op: A-Tier
Challenger (A-Tier)
The Challenger can serve a great (but somewhat sacrificial) purpose in Remnant 2, and you already know what we mean: They can be a tank at the front.
We have very few classes that can fulfill that role on the battlefield, and so we think very highly of the Challenger. That said, they can still sometimes end up feeling a bit useless in range-focused fights, so we'll pop them in A-Tier.
Gunslinger (A-Tier)
We were close to putting the Gunslinger in S-Tier again, but they have a "selfish kit" so it's hard to put them there for the co-op tier list.
The Gunslinger does provide some buffs to allies, which improve ammo collection rates, but it's nothing special. However, we really do have to insist on A-tier still, because the Gunslinger is one of the best DPS options in the game.
Hunter (A-Tier)
Where the Hunter is squishy in solo, they don't need to worry as much about that in co-op, and so the class can really shine.
Your mates might be a bit annoyed by you sitting at the back and allowing them to take the brunt of the enemy force, but that is the correct position for the Hunter to be in. We're also giving the Hunter a slight buff in the co-op tier list because their Hunter's Mark ability is also a buff to allies.
Alchemist (A-Tier)
The Alchemist is clearly intended for co-op and we do think it's much better in this environment.
Pretty much everything the Alchemist does can buff their allies, but they aren't going to do that much of anything themselves. Consider them "enablers".
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Co-Op: B-Tier
Invader (B-Tier)
The Invader's deception and movement based gameplay is somewhat obnoxious to play alongside. They can still do a lot of damage, but it always felt like the Invader in our co-op party was basically a lone-wolf rather than a character who was synergizing with us.
Maybe B-Tier is harsh, this is a good class, but it just feels like there are better options for a co-operative experience of Remnant 2. Also, there's literally nothing in their kit that buffs allies.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Co-Op: C-Tier
Handler (C-Tier)
The Handler and his dog are better for solo play, and they get quite easily outshone in co-op.
We wish we could put the Handler higher up but the raw power of the class feels underwhelming in the late game. However, we can't go as low as D-Tier, because the dog's revive ability can still help allies, and the Handler has a decent amount of buffs they can apply to allies.
Remnant 2 Best Classes For Co-Op: D-Tier
Summoner (D-Tier)
If you thought the Invader was obnoxious to play with, try the Summoner. The summons are just rubbish and get in the way of the characters trying to do any serious damage.
We do expect a rework of some classes, and the Summoner should be first in line for a buff so check back in with this list after the next patch. However, the way the Summoner's playstyle works makes us think this class will always be more suited to solo.
Explorer (D-Tier)
The Explorer is just not made for combat, so whether it be a co-op or solo tier-list, they will always be at the bottom.
What Is The Overall Best Class In Remnant 2?
The Gunslinger is the single best class in Remnant 2, being amazing in both solo and co-op play, and fairly easy to use. We expect nerfs will come to this class eventually, but as it was a pre-order bonus, we think the devs will want the Gunslinger to dominate for a few more months.
If you haven't pre-ordered, here is how to unlock the Gunslinger manually in Remnant 2. You need to complete your second world entirely, including the world boss. At that point return to Ward 13 and talk to Mudtooth, exhaust all dialogue options and he will evnetually give you a "Worn Cylinder". Take this item to Wallace and he will unlock the Gunslinger Archetype for you.
How To Change Class In Remnant 2?
A quick guide for you on actually changing class in Remnant 2:
- Open the Archetype screen and select your "Primary Archetype".
- Now pick the Engram of the new class you want to play.
- Slot the new Engram into the Primary Archetype slot.
- Done!
And that, fellow Remnant-enjoyers, was your complete guide to the best class in Remnant 2. We hope you found it useful.
Luckily, we don't have to deal with this nonsense in Remnant 2:
