Resident Evil 4 is getting review bombed by players, apparently for some pretty questionable reasons.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake recently released to much critical praise and commercial success. The game is not just a wonderful re-imagining of the classic, it’s also one of the best action games in recent memory, as you can read in our review. And yet, the game is getting review bombed by players. Why? The answer will most likely not shock you.
Resident Evil 4 Gets Review Bombed For All Kinds Of Wrong Reasons
Yes, it’s the typical argument that is being thrown at anyone and anything nowadays; apparently the game is “too woke”. Oh wow, is it now? You might wonder what that means, especially in terms of a game like Resi 4. Well, the answer is again an obvious one: it means nothing. Nothing good or sensible at least.
While critics (and many, many fans) can’t stop praising the game, it currently has User Scores of 4.3 (Xbox Series), 5.0 (PC) and 6.7 (PS5) on Metacritic. While some fans point out reasonable and understandable problems with the game, like some significant control issues with the Xbox version, a large part of this is straight nonsense.
Gamers online have complained about all kinds of things, including the fact that you can’t look under Ashley’s skirt anymore, which was possible in the original. The woke moralists have clearly gone too far now. How is one supposed to enjoy the game now? Oh, and did you know that the “humor is gone”, according to one review? That’s definitely news to me.
While things like these, or complaints that the game is “cringe” are funny, one part of this story is not. A lot of players were unhappy with the changes to Ava Wong, especially concerning the performance of actress Lily Gao. Of course, predictably and sadly, she was harassed online because of this. It even went so far, that Gao deleted all of her Instagram posts, before releasing a statement about the horrible actions against her:
Being the first Asian actor to portray Ada in the Resident Evil video games is an honour, and I will forever be grateful to our producer and director, for making the decision on authentic representation. It’s unfortunate that with the game’s release, also came the all too familiar feeling of ‘I don’t belong’. While criticism is expected, it’s not the first time an actor of colour faces racist and sexist harassment, for simply participating. Inauthentic casting perpetuates an unhealthy image that further dehumanizes the community they seek to reflect. It is time we stop only capitalizing on the sexualized, eroticized, and mysterious Asian woman, and make space to honour every kind of Asian woman. My Ada is a survivor. She is kind, just, intelligent, and funny. She is unpredictable, resilient, and absolutely not a stereotype.
It’s always a shame to see this kind of ridiculous and stupid behavior in the gaming world. Why can’t people just enjoy things or actually voice criticisms, instead of just throwing around buzzwords and harassing actors? Anyway, I’m gonna go back and enjoy some of that recently released Resi 4 Mercenaries mode.
