Sony's State of Play was held on September 13, and it was chock-full of great announcements and showings. With the imminent release of God of War Ragnarök, Sony is starting to roll out the red carpet for their biggest game of the year. The sequel to the fantastic reboot of the long-running series got another exciting trailer at this State of Play. While we missed some major titles like Spider-Man 2, we still got plenty of highlights at the show, including Tekken 8 and more. Let's check out everything we saw at the Sony State of Play in September 2022.

State of Play: Every Game & Announcement

Tekken 8

After being teased at EVO 2022, we finally got the full reveal for Tekken 8. And it was exactly what we had hoped for: crazy, eccentric balls-to-the-wall action. Jin and Kazuya are still beefing and now they're doing it in the middle of a storm, emitting lightning with every strike, and it all just looks amazing and smooth thanks to the game being Next-Gen-exclusive.

Tekken 8 will be released in 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Like a Dragon: Ishin

Hell yeah, Ishin is coming back. If you don't know, let me explain: Ishin was a spin-off for the amazing Yakuza series, but set in a Samurai-themed scenario... with guns, of course. And it's even more amazing than you imagine. The original game has been hard to come by in the west, but now Sony revealed Like a Dragon: Ishin, a full-on remake of the cult classic. Definitely check out the trailer for this one, it looks so good.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is coming in February 2023 to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Rise of the Ronin

If you thought one Samurai-themed game was not enough, then you're in luck: Sony revealed another game in that vein, called Rise of the Ronin. This is the next title by developer Team Ninja (makers of Nioh) looks slightly more sober than Ishin, but still offers plenty of wacky nonsense. And yes... it does look a lot like Ghost of Tsushima. But we're sure that will have plenty of unique things to offer.

Rise of the Ronin is slated for a release in 2024 for PlayStation 5. Yes, 2024. In two years. Welp.

God of War Ragnarök

We already expected it before and it actually came true: we finally got another trailer for God of War Ragnarök. And it again just completely stoked my hype. This trailer shows off a lot more details from the story than we've ever seen before. Maybe too much even. But it got the job done: I'm hyped, I want this game. Now. Gimme!

God of War Ragnarök will be released on November 9 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

State of Play September: The Best of the Rest

These were our highlights of the show, but there were plenty of other announcements and games as well. Here is a short rundown of the rest of the games:

  • Remember Project EVE? Me neither. But it's back and it's now actually called Stellar Blade. Brilliant title, very good. SB looks cool and it's coming in 2023 as a PS5-exclusive.
  • Synduality looked rad as heck. A mecha coop-shooter with aliens and big explosions and lots of colors and... what's not to love? Release date: 2023.
  • A bunch of VR stuff! PSVR 2 is coming and Sony showed a number of games coming to the platform in the near future including a Star Wars thing! Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge already exists, but there will now be an Enhanced Edition for PSVR 2. Neat!
Faris Delalic

Faris has been obsessed with gaming since his childhood and is now the Gaming lead at EarlyGame. He is a self-described FromSoftware shill, but also loves games like Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate 3 and Resident Evil 4....
