Sony has just filed a patent for a detachable PS5 touchscreen, that could be a real competitor to their own PlayStation Portal, releasing later this year.

Sony continues to push the boundaries of innovation, since they now again filed another patent for a new controller add on. Their new patent for a detachable PS5 controller touchscreen could be a potential contender to the already announced PlayStation Portal Remote Player Controller, which is set to hit the market later this year.

Apparently, Sony is playing against themselves now, since there is no other worthy competitor on the horizon that could be a genuine threat to the PlayStation ecosystem. A bold statement... I know.

Sony Patent For Detachable PS5 Controller Display

The detachable PS5 controller display works as follows:

The patent reveals a “secondary unit” that can connect to the DualSense controller . This secondary unit offers touchscreen capabilities and enables players to stream content to the standard DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 console.

What's strange about this feature is that it might make the PlayStation Portal controller unnecessary. The PlayStation Portal is a new device that lets players play PS5 games on the controller's screen. The current screen can't be taken off, but the new patented version seems better because you'd only need to buy the screen, not a whole new controller. Maybe Sony realized not everyone wants to spend $199 on a portable PS5 device, so they're thinking about a cheaper option. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the future.

After all, Sony releases new patents all the time, it's nothing new. Earlier this year, they even filed a patent for a PlayStation controller that changes temperature!
