A couple of weeks ago, gaming developer Atlus released a mysterious teaser for the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, a JRPG series that first appeared in 1987. It is, at its core, a role-playing game series with spin-offs in other genres. There are also adaptations as manga or anime. Among the best-known spin-offs here is probably the Persona series.

Fans quickly figured out that the countdown teaser refers to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner – Soul Hackers. And Atlus didn't keep us waiting too long, officially confirming that the teaser is indeed Soul Hackers 2, a sequel to the 25-year-old Sega Saturn game that will also be released this year.

Soul Hackers 2 Release Date

Soul Hackers 2 will be released on August 26, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Like the Persona series before it, Soul Hackers 2 has the distinction of dropping the "Shin Megami Tensei" and "Devil Summoner" titles from its name and presenting itself as a standalone JRPG series under the wing of Atlus.

Soul Hackers 2: Story & Gameplay

Soul Hackers 2 is a dungeon-crawling role-playing game that is set in a futuristic cyberpunk depiction of Japan and focuses on two opposing Devil Summoner factions engaged in cyberwarfare with a supernatural entity called Aion. This is what Atlas has to say about the game:

In a war between devil summoners, it's up to Ringo and her to team to decipher destiny and save the world from the apocalypse! Set in the Shin Megami Tensei universe, Soul Hackers 2 tells a new story of two agents of Aion, Ringo and Figure, and their struggle to prevent the destruction of the world.

Soul Hackers 2 is said to inherit the essence of Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, but evolve the gameplay and improve it with better artstyle, gameplay and storytelling. The game will feature a press-turn combat system like other Shin Megami Tensei games and incorporate all-out attacks, a mechanic previously only found in the Persona series.

The game will also be released with both Japanese and English dubbing and subtitles for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. A collector's edition has also been confirmed for the PlayStation consoles in Japan.
