Magic, fantasy and action-packed fights, this is Soulframe. Will Digital Extreme's new MMORPG also win over Warframe fans? Here are all the news, leaks and details about Soulframe.
Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe, recently announced its brand-new game: Soulframe. And the latter is definitely not the sequel to Warframe. While Warframe is a fast-paced shooter set in a sci-fi universe, Soulframe is a fantasy MMO with a focus on melee combat. So it's not a spiritual successor, but will release us into a completely new world, full of magic. After over a decade, Game Director Steve Sinclair just wanted to do something new, I guess.
So far, very few details about Soulframe are known. Actually, most of you probably didn't even know the game exists at all, so let's change that. Get ready to learn more about Soulframe, its release date and story details.
Soulframe Release Date
Digital Extremes have not yet announced an official release date for Soulframe. The game is still in a very early stage of development, but it already has its own website. While the main concept existed since 2019, only a few developers – mainly artists – were involved with the project until the beginning of this year.
Sinclair admits that the announcement of the game is actually too early. However, the developers want to be transparent with the community and not withhold anything from them. And further information about the project will be announced as soon as possible. It's possible that a test version will already be available in a year's time.
Game Setting, Story & Everything We Know About Soulframe
As mentioned above, Soulframe is a fantasy MMO with a focus on melee combat. In an interview with the Washington Post, Steve Sinclair revealed the first details:
Where ‘Warframe’ is focused on shooting, this one’s focused on melee.Where ‘Warframe’ is super fast and crazy high-speed, this one’s going to be a lot more slow and heavy. But it still has a lot of similarities to the genre that we have experience in.
Sinclair also said that the inspiration for the world itself is taken from works like Princess Mononoke and The Neverending Story. The conceit in Soulframe is that the world is "a little angry about what's been done to it." In other words, Mother Nature is pissed off at the destructive behavior of humans and is therefore fighting back.
The game will focus on themes of nature, restoration and exploration, especially the clash of industry and nature. Soulframe will have a large open hub world that will serve as the overworld. Sinclair adds that the team wants to put a much greater focus on exploration than Warframe did. However, not much else is currently known about the new project.
