So, I’m a sucker for dark games, dark movies and just mature content in general (to my editor: no, that’s not a porn reference, Michelle). I loved when the last Wolverine movie, Logan, was rated R, and I would’ve thrown a fit, if Deadpool hadn’t been. Now, I read that Spider-Man 2 is going to be darker, and I’ll be honest with you: I don’t like it.
Marvel Boss Says Spider-Man 2 Will Be Darker
I’ll give you the full quote right off the bat:
“If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire Strikes Back. It gets darker."
There. Not a particularly long quote, but the man said what he said. Of course, it’s not hard to imagine the game being darker with Venom being in the mix – Venom is a murderous symbiote with no conscience and endless power, so he’s out to f*ck sh*t up. Still, Spider-Man has forever been the family’s superhero. I enjoyed Spidey as a kid, with my parents, and I wouldn’t exactly say the same for Deadpool, Wolverine, The Punisher or even Batman. Though the latter is DC (I’m no chump, I know my stuff), all those superheroes thrive in a mature setting. Hell, even Daredevil works better with the dark and gritty, but Spider-Man is meant to be witty and light-hearted, and help us escape the dark realities of life, not remind us of them.
There's much more Marvel on the horizon than just Spider-Man 2:

Then again, after the original Spider-Man and the Miles Morales DLC, it’s time to shake things up. We all know Spider-Man 2 will have the New York setting, so we can’t expect much variety there. Plus, Insomniac already announced that their upcoming Wolverine game will be rated mature, so maybe Spider-Man 2 is just their way to test the waters.
Either way, I’m intrigued, and, now that I finished writing this, I’m realizing that this has made me more curious about Spider-Man 2 than I was before, so… I guess Insomniac are doing something right already.
Oh, this article was not about the release date, but public service: Spider-Man 2 is releasing for the PlayStation 5 in 2023.
