BlueTwelve Studio's popular indie game Stray is currently playable on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. But what about the Nintendo Switch? Let's find out whether there are plans for Stray to make its way to the Switch.
Stray came out in July 2022, and it was an instant hit, hence it won at the Game Awards. Lots of people loved it, and it was one of the best games of 2022. But it was only on PC, PS4, and PS5 at first. Xbox and Switch players had to wait. Now it is finally on Xbox, and there might be a Switch version coming soon.
Stray: Switch Version Possibly Still Coming
Though there is currently no version of Stray for Nintendo Switch, hope for a release on the Japanese publisher's handheld console is everything but lost. That is due to a small detail in the very first teaser trailer for the game, released in 2020.
At the end of the trailer, there is a message saying "Console exclusive for a limited time". Publisher Annapurna Interactive seems to have made a deal with Sony for time-limited exclusivity, which we see a lot of in gaming nowadays. The fact that Stray recently got released on Xbox consoles proved that the game can be released for other platforms as well, so also on Nintendo Switch, at least in theory.
One reoccurring reason that games get released for every platform except the Switch is that the Nintendo console doesn't have enough hardware power to run AAA games properly (as it happened for Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, for example) – but the PC system requirements for Stray are quite low. So there is hope for a Stray Switch port that could run the game. Otherwise, several games have a so-called "Cloud Version" on the Switch, where the game is streamed to the console.
Considering the huge success of Stray, and the reputation of the Switch as a great home for indie games, we expect that all involved parties will try to get the cat game to the console. Maybe there will be some kind of special edition for the upcoming Switch 2...
