Mario is obviously best known for the amazing 2D and 3D Jump & Run games. But Mario has always done a lot more than that… and no, we’re not talking about the sports games or Mario Kart.

Two of my favorite Mario spin-offs are Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, which turn the adventures of everyone’s favorite plumber into captivating, hilarious and well-written RPGs. But there was one game that spawned these two successful series and which hasn’t appeared on our screens since the Super Nintendo: Super Mario RPG.

Super Mario RPG Remake Coming This Year

During the Nintendo Direct on June 21, a remake of Super Mario RPG was announced, which will release on November 17 for Nintendo Switch. The original was a Super Nintendo (SNES) game and came out in 1996. This was one of the first Mario spin-offs, with Nintendo trying their mascot out in the (then super popular) genre of JRPGS.

And it was awesome. The game had a really solid turn-based combat system and genuinely funny writing. However, Super Mario RPG was never continued – instead, Nintendo tried their hand on different types of JRPGs with Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, which still got sequels through the years.

It’s really cool to see then that Nintendo is going back to this classic to show it some love and give us the chance to experience it again. And it looks awesome! The humor of the original shines through, the art style looks great and some of the unique designs are as fun as they always were. Check out the trailer here:
