If Baldur's Gate 3 looks like an interesting, fun game to you but you haven't played any DND before - don't worry! Here are some great beginner tips.
Baldur's Gate 3 is basically a DnD sim. And so naturally there are thousands of different endings, and you can experience the story your own way. But that can sound intimidating if you've never played DnD before - don't worry, we got you.
Here are our four best tips for Baldur's Gate 3 if you've never played DnD!
1. Positioning
One of the most important game mechanics in DND is the tactical, round-based combat system, which has also been implemented in Baldur's Gate 3. It's all about wise positioning and using your spells and actions wisely to maximize your damage and minimize the damage you get. In most cases fighting in formation and huddled together won't work well, since it barres the risk of wiping the party just with some AoE attacks. Don't be afraid to split up your party on the battlefield. The archer might be better placed up on a platform or a little bit far off so he doesn't get attacked as quickly. Search for cover when your opponents have more range or try to lure them into an advantageous position for you.
Also don't forget your crowd control. Many classes do have spells or trades to stun, to immobilize or other options to make an enemy skip their turn. With good positioning you might be able to CC more than you expect.
- If you want to know what Classes and Subclasses there are and what they are capable of, checkout this tier-list of every class in DnD.
2. Using the Environment
Let's talk about the environment.
- First look for lethal environment you can use like cliffs or maybe you are sparing on top of a building. In many fights you can take out an opponent just by pushing him down a heightened space. The laws of gravity count for everyone and a fall of 30 feet is deadly. You might also find explosive barrels or other props that can deal damage. So make your life easier and use those environmental opportunities to get rid of some evil scum.
- Influence the environment so it works for you. Like DND, Baldur's gate 3 works with statuses (like fire, poison, and shock) that apply damage but also can heal sometimes. There are some ways to create these zones that can often help you. Use an AoE spell like Grease or it is also possible to create these areas by using items lying around. Those are great ways to zone enemies, slow them or make them take damage if they still decide to pass through, as you can also see in the example below.
3. Combat Can Often Be Avoided
Also, not everything is about combat in RPGs like Baldur's Gate or DND. Often fighting can be avoided, there is a reason for talents like Persuasion and Deception. So instead of killing everyone in game you can try to skip the fight and maybe make new friends instead. Or maybe you can steal the quest item from the person. There are many ways to get through the story and not all of them deal with violence.
4. Spell Usage
Keep in mind you do not have infinite resources, that is especially important for spellcasters. You only have a certain amount of spell slots. Yes, the spells that use spell slots are stronger and it is tempting to use them. Nonetheless, you want to keep some spell slots. There could be another fight waiting for you before you can take your long rest to regain them. Use your Cantrips instead. They are often a bit weaker, but that doesn't mean they are useless, they are your consistent damage output as a spellcaster and since they don't need any resources they are great to household with your spell slots.
That brings me to my last point, take your time playing the game. Explore and listen, the world of Baldur's Gate 3 is full of interesting characters and lore. Full of beautiful places and Easter eggs and enthralling stories. No one rush's you just look around and have fun playing in a fantastic world. Also take your long rests, not only they give you all your spell slots and your health points back. During the long rests you can also bond with your companions and get to know them better.
