Columbia teams up with PlayStation in the new Uncharted film. Now we have the first trailer and even a release date.
Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg will be starring as Nathan Drake and Sully in the new Uncharted movie from Sony's Columbia Pictures. We now have a first look at the the film, with Sony Pictures Entertainment releasing the very first Uncharted Movie trailer.
Captioned "Fortune favors the bold", we can't help but wonder whether the movie is going to be a little bit too bold for Sony's good. After all, it takes Tom Holland, best known for his work as Spiderman, as well as Lone Survivor's Mark Wahlberg, and places them in the role of Uncharted's two most iconic characters. The twist? The film will feature a young Sully and a young Drake.
Does that seem a bit weird to you too? It kind of does to us. We'll get into why in a second, but first you should check out the new Uncharted Movie trailer for yourself:
Okay, so the first thing is: what's up with Wahlberg's hair in the thumbnail for the trailer? Do we spy bangs? Well, that's off-putting. Perhaps even more off-putting is Sully's utter lack of a both a moustache and a cigar. We understand that the film makers will want to put their own spin on the franchise, but seriously? That ain't Sully!
Less atrocious is Holland's interpretation of Nathan Drake, which does admittedly seem pretty on-point. He has the right cadence to his voice, and is basically playing Spiderman with guns in the trailer. The outfit looks pretty dope too, which is something we're quite pleased about.
We like the idea of exploring Nathan Drake's backstory a little more here. They were some of the best moments from the games, and if done well, could play for some pretty fantastic entertainment. There's a problem, though. This is clearly not a "prequel" or something to the games. Instead, Columbia seem to be going in the direction of a totally stand-alone adaptation of the source material.
The trailer clearly wants to play homage to the games, with a number of iconic scenes playing out just as they did in the game. Chloe certainly seems to be here, as well as someone whom we can only assume must be a young Nardine. That's nice, but it does seem a little odd that Chloe in particular seems like ten to twenty years younger than Nate. They hook up in the games... this is a little weird?
Meanwhile, one thing we can say is that we'll have to be prepared for some super high-octane set-pieces here. From the aeroplane crash, to the pirate ship, to what looks like the auction from Uncharted 4, everything looks pretty authentic, and we're certainly not complaining about that.
Honestly, we're a little confused about the choice to plop the new Uncharted Movie in the past, and star Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake when Nathan Fillion would clearly be a perfect choice for this iconic character. That being said, it actually looks super exciting, and we'll certainly be checking it out when it drops in theatres.
When is the Uncharted Movie Release Date?
The Uncharted Movie will release on February 18, 2022. The film will release exclusively in theatres, before assumedly moving to streaming platforms later on. It looks like the perfect movie to see at the cinemas, so we'll be diving right on in, with a huge bucket of popcorn, to check out what Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg have to offer in the new Uncharted Movie!
