GTA big boss Strauss Zelnick recently sat down with Xbox big boss Phil Spencer to talk about big boss sh*t. Eventually, the conversation moved to the possibility of a GTA movie, and the Take Two CEO was very clear in his answer as to why there is no GTA movie:
“Even though I sometimes think, I’m watching White Lotus and I would kind of like something else to happen, or Ozark, I would really like something else to happen, but if I get to make something else happen, I can no longer believe in it. It can’t be real for me in that moment. Whereas GTA Online is real for you because of your engagement.”
Yes. GTA Online is real. Movies are not. Duh. Seriously, though, this does make sense: Movies are not remotely as interactive as games are, and it just seems like Take Two is not ready to remove GTA from the gaming magic. Though, if I were to interpret his words, I would say he means quite the opposite: Compared to games, movies are very real, whereas games are forever fantastical, which, arguably, is what makes GTA 5 and GTA Online so ever-lasting. Zelnick went on to specify another reason why a GTA movie is not planned anytime soon:
“And that would mean we’d need to finance that motion picture. While we have the balance sheet to do it, we don’t have the corporate expertise to do it. Only a handful of people inside Take-Two have ever worked in that business. I’m one of them. But that’s not what we do for a living.”
Stick to your guns. I like it. You see, Rockstar might be greedy when it comes to that GTA Online money, but at least they're not trying to milk their franchise beyond its quality expiration date (nah, they're just re-releasing GTA 5 for a third time).
- At least the Trilogy Remaster is coming soon: Confirmed: Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Remaster Is Coming Soon
The reason why Zelnick was asked about the GTA movie is because rumors started circulating that a GTA movie is in the making, but, as you can see, there are no such plans. Sorry, not sorry.
Since this is starting to blow up... The "source" is this website. Almost all of their articles are baseless rumors. https://t.co/EJbfKrKCkV As @Cade_Onder said, they rarely get anything right, and Strauss Zelnick himself said they have no plans for a GTA movie. Big doubts. https://t.co/TtPeOPaiUk
