What we were worried about is finally happening: The Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass are becoming more expensive.
About a year ago, Sony shocked fans with a price increase for the PlayStation 5. Instead of $499.99, the latest console from Sony now costs $549.99 for those who want to bring it home.
Initially, Microsoft responded defensively and assured its fans that the price of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S would remain stable – at least for the time being.
However, a later statement from Xbox Chief Phil Spencer hinted towards the fact that this could change soon. As Spencer explained, a price increase for certain Xbox products cannot be ruled out. This could happen as early as 2023, and Microsoft quickly followed up on these words with actions.
Xbox Series X Is Becoming More Expensive
In mid-February, Microsoft already increased console prices in Japan. They stated that this measure was the result of assessing market conditions. As expected, Microsoft will soon raise prices for its consoles in other countries as well, confirming this to The Verge.
This also affects several markets, including the UK, Australia and most European countries. The Xbox Series S will keep its price of $299.99.
Price Increase for Xbox Game Pass
The price of Xbox Game Pass is also increasing. Instead of $9.99 per month, it will now be $10.99 per month. This change also affects the US market.
For the Ultimate version, the price will increase by two dollars. Instead of $14.99 per month, the subscription will now cost $16.99 per month. This is the first time since its introduction in 2017 that Microsoft has raised the prices for its digital gaming subscription service.
Xbox (Game Pass): Price Increase Won't Immediately Take Effect
It is now official that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass will become more expensive. However, the price increases will not take effect immediately, so the old prices still apply for now.
If you’re already a Game Pass subscriber, these new recurring prices will start from August 13 (September 13 in Germany). New Xbox Game Pass members will have to pay the new prices immediately from July 6 onward. If you’re subscribed to Xbox Game Pass through a yearly code, the new pricing won’t take effect until you go to renew your subscription.
