Unofficial Zelda: Link's Awakening PC Port Taken Down – Nintendo Does It Again

An impressive fan-made PC port of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was released last week – and Nintendo has already DMCA'd it.

Have you heard of the amazing new The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake? No, not the Switch remake (although that one's pretty cool too), the other, fan-made remake that was released just last week! If this is your first time hearing about it then I'm sorry to say you may have missed your chance to check it out yourself: The project has already been hit with a DMCA takedown notice by Nintendo. But at least you can still catch a glimpse of it in its trailer!

For a fan project, this is some seriously impressive work. Not only is this a full native PC port of Link's Awakening DX, it also gets rid of the screen transitions in the original, increases the FPS cap to 120, gives you four item slots instead of only two and lets you zoom as far in and out as you like! Which does potentially trivialize some of the dungeons that are supposed to challenge your spatial reasoning and memorization skills, but it's still pretty neat!

As for who is responsible for this port, that's actually a bit of a mystery. It doesn't have any credits apart from the original ones, and both the project's itch.io page and its YouTube channel are only named "Link's Awakening DX HD". Usually these kinds of fan projects are supposed to help fill a developer portfolio, but this modern-day Robin Hood (or team of Robin Hoods) decided to not take credit for this one for some reason.

Of course, Nintendo's lawyers hit the itch.io page with a DMCA takedown notice as soon as they caught wind of the project. After all, it could take attention away from Nintendo's own remake of the game on the Switch (during the Holiday season of all times), and we can't have that!

What used to be the official download page now only links to Nintendo's DMCA takedown notice. Such a shame. Especially since taking a file off the internet means it's gone forever, right? Surely, there is absolutely no way to obtain a copy of the port via other channels now...
