Champion Mastery has not felt masterful in a long time, which is why Riot is finally going to update the LoL Champion Mastery in 2024.
Mastering a champion has not felt rewarding in a long time. The champion Mastery sign is just something you use to tilt your opponents after solo-killing them. Other than that there is not much of a use for it and no one can truly tell how much time and effort you've put into a champion since well.... almost everyone has their champions at Mastery level 7 by this point.
So, Riot is going to be updating Champion Mastery in 2024 and making it much more of a reward to consistently play a champion and play them well.
LoL: Champion Mastery Overhaul Revealed
With Champion Mastery basically being level capped currently, it doesn't feel great to reach Level 7... then all you've got left is to get points and points to have a big shiny number under your mastery icon when loading into a game. Boring.
So, Riot is going to be introducing some changes to the Mastery system to give meaning back to the whole thing. To do this, they decided to look over some guiding principles of the Mastery system in League to work on something new and much more exciting.
- Mastery is for all players, regardless of mode or rank.
- Mastery reflects real accomplishment, not just grind.
- Players are always pursuing greater mastery—and the system should reflect that.
Leveling Changes In Mastery System
Like before, there are going to be some tokens you need to earn to be able to level up, similar to how it is now. The difference? There is no level cap for Mastery anymore. You will continuously be able to level up if you play your champion often and do it well.
- Earn mastery score by playing games as usual (more for higher grades).
- Earn Marks of Mastery via a new reward track for each champ that resets every split.
- Level up when you have enough mastery score (experience with the champ) and Marks of Mastery (accomplishments).
Mastery Level | Marks Needed |
1-4 | None |
5-9 | 1 per level |
10+ | 2 per level |
There are also new crests which have been added to the game. These are inspired by Mount Targon since it isn't easy climbing the mountain, and it isn't easy climbing in League of Legends and mastering a champion. There is also an infinite scaling representation for those who reach Level 10 and higher.
Split Mastery Coming To League of Legends
So, there will not just be normal mastery over an accounts lifetime, but each split there will also be additional mastery rewards for players to get so that they can show off their skill in specific meta's of League of Legends to make things more exciting.
[...] an infinite system can sometimes feel like a grind, so we wanted to create something that celebrates shorter-term achievements—something that lets you prove your mastery over a champion in a particular season or split.
Not only that, but the team also wanted to add in a reward track which will be less random than just getting some Hextech Chests or something. This is where the Split Mastery also comes into play.
- Each split, every champion will have a 4-milestone reward track.
- To complete each milestone, you’ll need to play and earn increasingly impressive mastery grades — each milestone requires one or more high grades to complete.
- Completing a milestone gives you Marks of Mastery and other rewards.
- After completing your 4 milestones, there’s a more-difficult repeating bonus milestone for our one-tricks and over-achievers.
- Completing the final milestone (#4) will unlock the champion’s title (such as Aatrox’s title “The Darkin Blade”) for use as your own title for the remainder of the split!
Seasonal Milestone | Grades Needed | Rewards |
1 | 1x B Grade, 4x D- and up | 1x Mark of Mastery Hextech Chest (up to 6 available per split) |
2 | 1x A Grade, 4x D- and up | 1x Mark of Mastery |
3 | 1x S Grade, 4x D- and up | 2x Marks of Mastery Hextech Chest (unlimited) |
4 | 1x S Grade, 4x D- and up | 2x Marks of Mastery Champion Title unlocks until next split |
5+ | 3x S Grades, 7x D- and up | 1x Mark of Mastery |
Mastery Sets
Not only is Riot going to be giving out these new Mastery Tokens and emblems, but at the end of a season you'll also be able to have a recap of your best and favorite champions in a Mastery Set. This is meant to reward those players who play a lot of different champions and do so well.
Each set will consist of a list of champions, that are a combination of your favorites and ones we think you might like, as well as a few curated by us. Completing milestones on any of the champions in the set’s reward tracks will contribute progress toward rewards from the set.
It's also important to note that your current Champion Mastery is not going to be forgotten. It will be moved over to the new system, so if you've got a champion you've been honing, then those points will already be visible to players with the new system.
