LoL Worlds 2023: G2 Scrim Results Show Why Scrims Are Not To Be Trusted

Going into the 2023 League of Legends World Championship, all everyone could talk about was how good G2 was, judging from their scrims. But the team failed to make it out of the Swiss Stage, so should scrims still be taken as evidence?

The 2023 League of Legends World Championship is moving into the next round, with the knockout stage. Eight teams have made it through the Swiss stage, but for the first time in nine years not a single European representative will take the stage.

G2 Esports, going into the tournament, was hailed as the hope of the west, many claiming that they'd been the team to beat during their scrims. Unfortunately, the team was unable to show off the same results on stage.

G2 Esports did was one win away from taking down the LPL's second seeded BiliBili Gaming, but fell just short in their final game. The team had been a dominant force domestically throughout the year, but weren't able to show off their skill on the international stage.

At the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational the team G2 was eliminated in the second round by none other than BiliBili Gaming. Now at Worlds they also could not win out over the Chinese representative.

Romain "Romain" Bigeard, the team's manager posted the team's scrim result throughout the 2023 season, as well as their solo queue sessions. All this was shown so that fans would know how dedicated G2 Esports and the players of the org are to winning, with Worlds being their aim.

In the posted practice results, it was seen that G2 Esports managed to beat some of the best teams in the world with positive records against JDG, Gen.G and even BLG.

Some people have also pointed out that scrims are meant to help teams improve, hence why they might not ban the champions of the teams they're currently playing against in the scrim, but rather the champions of their upcoming opponents instead to figure out how to outplay them.

Of course, the images only show the result and not the details of the games. But one thing is for sure, hyping a team just because of scrim results isn't the way to go about it. A scrim environment is completely different from the stage and the quick exit of top tier teams like G2 just hammer this point home.
