HBO Max treats fans to season 2 of Tokyo Vice after nearly two years of waiting. Here's everything you need to know: the release date, the returning cast and anything else you could possibly ask for.
Let's continue exploring Tokyo and its dark secrets, shall we? Tokyo Vice follows American journalist Jake Adelstein and his new life in Japan that has way more in store for him than he bargained for. He delves deeper and deeper into the corrupt underworld of Tokyo. "Murder does not happen in Tokyo," you say? Ever heard of the Yakuza? Jake certainly has.
Tokyo Vice's story isn't pure fiction. It's loosely based on the actual Jake Adelstein's book – check it out right here.
Season 2 won't give Adelstein a break at all. After the shocking events and a certain video tape he found in the first season's finale, he and Katagari have business to attend to. If they dare.
Tokyo Vice Season 2 | Release Date & Trailer
Tokyo Vice hits HBO on February 8, 2024 with two episodes to kick off. The second season is even slightly longer than the first one, upping the new release from eight to ten episodes. After the premiere, Thursday is going to be Tokyo Vice day with a new episode each week. The season finale is going to air on Thursday, April 4.
Tokyo Vice Season 2 | Old And New Cast
Most of the cast remains the same, and some character's fates still hang in limbo, and it remains to be seen if some are gone for good or if there's hope for them.
Still, our two main figures return: Ansel Elgort as Jake Adelstein and Ken Watanabe as Hiroto Katagiri. The cast also includes Rachel Keller, Rinko Kikuchi, Show Kasamatsu and Ayumi Ito.
The cast also expands with two new players in Tokyo. For one, there's Shoko Nagata, played by Miki Maya – this investigator will bring some more spice into the show as she wants to take a more aggressive approach to the yakuza situation. That's girlboss behavior.
Also new in the cast is Yosuke Kubozuka as Naoki Hayama, a new member of Tokyo's underworld. And concerning the characters with their fates unknown, here's Tokyo Vice creator J.T. Rogers' comments on the matter:
We had Max's blessing to end season 1 with an episode that was nothing but cliffhangers. I was writing season 2 while we were shooting season 1, so it is the same story that we’re following. Everything that was left hanging at the end of season 1 will be settled — if not immediately, then over the course of the season. Some right away, some later on.
How exactly those cliffhangers are going to be resolved remains to be seen. Make sure to catch the first episodes on February 8 to check out which questions will be answered "right away", as Rogers put it!
