The Summoner Spells in League of Legends are sometimes a science in itself. Smite has always been a special spell, since It's only useful for the junglers, and so it can be very demoralizing when you forgot to change it, if you're not in the jungle role. Now, the community demands some changes regarding this problem.
We guess that every long-standing League of Legends players experienced this at least once during their play time, you or a teammate forgot to change your summoner spells and now have to play with Smite on the lane. For junglers the smite gets auto assigned by joining the ingame lobby, but not the other way around.
Now, players demand a quality of life change regarding this problem. Here is everything you need to know about that demand and the community reactions.

LoL: Players Demand New Auto Assign Function For Smite
When you're getting assigned to the jungle position, if chosen or autofilled, LoL will give you the Summoner Spell Smite automatically. What the game doesn't do, is to change your summoner spells back, if you're not the assigned jungler. So it happens from time to time, that you or a teammate still have the spell, and now you're playing in lane with it, quite useless there to be honest.
This has been a problem for years now and many fans demand changes regarding the auto assign feature. In a popular Thread on the League of Legends Subreddit the user "Allyngton" re-opened the topic and describes his experiences,
Unfortunately I have seen quite a few people have smite on accident as a laner this season. Upon asking a few of them usually it is due to them having been Autofilled Jungle in their last game and they have forgotten to switch. Using the same logic Riot used to auto assign Smite in the first place I think it should be a reasonable change.Edit: Just want to confirm that I meant that it auto assigns off from smite when you played jungle in your prior game and now are not playing jungle in the lobby you are in.
Obviously there is only the player to blame, if he forgets to change his Summoner Spell before the end of the pick & ban phase, but it drags down the whole team and punishes them for something, that they haven't had influence in. Which of course will lead to a bad moods, flaming and most of the time to a straight loss in the game.
Auto-assigning Smite to junglers was a great idea, I think its a good idea to un-assign it to Laners as well by u/Allyngton in leagueoflegends
So from a certain point of view, Riot should definitely do something about it. But this is just my view on the current situation. Let's take a look at the several community reactions to the thread.
Community Reactions: Some Revolutionary Ideas
According to the many comments below this thread, a big portion of the community are agreeing with these suggestions. The most upvoted comment was written by "GrumpigPlays", in which he suggests a totally new feature for League of Legends to solve this problem,
I'll raise you another idea, I would love the ability to go into my champion page an assigned preferred summoner spells for the champion, as well as a default set. I mostly go Teleport Flash in midland, but depending on the champ it might be ignite teleport, ignite flash, or ghost ignite. So it would be nice to be able to not have to ever worry about my summoner spells again
The user "timelessblur" supports these ideas, and compares the impact of a wrongly picked smite with the problems that would occur when you miss picked other summoner spells,
Oh god yes please do that. The number of times I have been screwed by that hurts a lot. Smite is one of those spells that super screws you if you you can deal with gold and xp debuff plus changes other things. The other sums if stuck with it just means a slight worse spell but not game kill like smite by mistake.
Another idea so solve the whole problem with smite in League of Legends was presented by the user "TheTMJ", his idea would be quite revolutionary to say the least,
At some point they should just remove smite as a summoner spell and attach it to the smite item. I don't see why this deep into Leagues lifespan it needs to be a choice when jungles been established as a role for years.
But to be honest, this might break the game completely and would make the jungler the strongest role in the game, especially the one with quick camp clear abilities and gank potential. So it will be interesting to see, if and how Riot might change the auto assigns for Smite in the future, but I doubt that anything is planned so far.
This problem, if you ant to call it one, has been in the game for ages and at the moment it's simply the task of the players to keep an eye on their summoner spells. But we can understand every player, that feels treated unfairly when losing a game because of a simple mistake like this,
