Their hopes have been held up for a while, but now every chance is gone: Team Vitality can no longer qualify for the 2023 LEC Season Finals. Just like Astralis, they now have a long wait ahead of them before they get to compete again. Meanwhile, two teams are fighting for their lives in the lower playoffs bracket.
Vitality were at their competitor's mercy after their regular season elimination from the summer split, but reaching season finals was not completely unrealistic for them. A third place in spring kept carrying their hopes for a qualification, although it would have been another difficult lower bracket run.
Unfortunately for the French organization, their competition was not keen on having Vitality qualify for the season finals after an abysmal split. With three of the four playoffs participants behind them in the championship points standings, they are now guaranteed to be out of contention.
Championship Points Distribution In Summer Split Comes Back To Bite Vitality
The worst case scenario has happened for Vitality when the teams ahead of them were eliminated in the group stage. Mad Lions and KOI went out winless, SK Gaming won at least one series and subsequently overtook Vitality. The teams below them in the championship points standings, Excel Esports, Team Heretics and Fnatic, all managed to qualify for the playoffs.
While Vitality are still in sixth place currently, the winner of the playoffs lower bracket match between Team Heretics and Fnatic is guaranteed to surpass them. This means the end to an up-and-down season for the French organization, leaving them with a long off-season ahead and many questions about their roster to be answered ahead of the 2024 season.
The LEC summer playoffs start on Monday, 18:00 CEST (17:00 BST / 9:00 PST) with G2 Esports facing off against Excel Esports. If Excel wins this match, they qualify for the season finals and eliminate KOI by doing so.
