This year's gamescom will be missing a familiar face, as Nintendo has decided to skip the event. The absence of the renowned publisher and developer marks a notable change from last year's presence.
Nintendo will reportedly not grace gamescom 2024 with its presence. Nintendo's absence dashes hopes for a long-awaited reveal of the rumored Switch 2. Despite speculation that the successor to the current console will be released this year, insiders suggest that it has been delayed.
No Switch 2, No Exclusive Games
Furthermore, the gaming horizon seems bleak. While non-exclusive Switch titles may still find a platform through other publishers, major exclusive announcements or updates, such as for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, seem unlikely.
Although Nintendo of Europe declined to give a specific reason for the decision, they did hint at some interesting alternatives for German gamers:
"While gamescom holds a significant place in Nintendo's calendar, we've opted out of participating in Cologne this year after careful deliberation. Instead, players can look forward to experiencing Nintendo Switch games at various events across Germany."
With Nintendo's lack of participation, many gamers will not have much incentive to travel to Cologne this year and visit gamescom in person. But it is not yet clear what games and specials the other exhibitors will be offering – those who have already confirmed their attendance will be announced at a later date.
