RollerCoaster Tycoon has a new owner, with Atari purchasing the rights to publish the games in the future.
RollerCoaster Tycoon is celebrating its 25th anniversary and just in time it was revealed that RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, one of the most beloved and well-known installments of the entire franchise has been purchased by none other than Atari, who will now have sole rights to publish the game in the future.
This means that Atari is now the sole publisher of all Roller Coaster Tycoon games. Atari is confident that this change will benefit all fans of the franchise and the games.
Atari Now Owns Rights To All Roller Coast Tycoon Games
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 was one of the most popular titles in the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise. Releasing back in 2004, the game revolutionized the genre, by moving away from the fixed isometric viewpoint to 3D graphics. Not only that, but this was also the first time players got to actually ride the roller coasters they built themselves thanks to the CoasterCam.
Now that Atari also owns the publishing rights for RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, they'll be able to publish the game and future installments across PC, console and mobile devices. This is all being done in partnership with Roller Coaster tycoon Chris Sawyer.
Atari is able to develop new titles and also grow the franchise by expanding on existing digital and physical distribution of existing games. These types of sandbox building games have truly become some of the biggest games with other titles like Sim City, Planet Coaster and Zoo Tycoon also garnering a lot of love and attention from fans.
The most recent mainline game, RollerCoaster Tycoon World, was released in 2016. The game was developed by Nivizziio Creations and published by Atari at the time. So it'll be interesting to see what this new development will bring for Roller Coaster fans worldwide.
