The Sailor Moon outfits have always stood out with their unique charm. Some of these costumes were even inspired by famous fashion brands. Here are some striking examples.
Sailor Moon is a well-known anime that first aired in 1992, based on the manga written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi in 1991. The anime consists of five seasons, each with around 40 episodes. Due to the series' popularity, three additional movies and some spin-offs were also released.
The story follows an ordinary girl named Usagi Tsukino, who can transform into the powerful warrior Sailor Moon. Along with her friends, the Sailor Guardians, she battles evil and protects the world from supernatural threats.
Usagi and her friends sometimes wear extraordinary outfits in the series, adding to their charm. Some of these outfits were inspired by fashion shows designs, tailored perfectly to fit the characters.
Sailor Moon: The Fashion Dresses
The talented mangaka Naoko Takeuchi is the character designer of Sailor Moon and was responsible for designing some of the characters' outfits. As a passionate fashion enthusiast, she was inspired by prominent fashion icons.
She drew inspiration from great fashion designers like Chanel, Thierry Mugler, Christian Lacroix, Versace, and Christian Dior, blending their styles with her own creative ideas. The result can be seen in many different episodes and it is breathtaking every time!
Princess Serenity – Dior
Catzi (Negamoon Sister) – Mugler
Queen Beryl – Mugler
Hotaru/Sailor Saturn – Mugler
Dark Lady – Yves Saint Laurent
Setsuna/Sailor Pluto – Chanel
Calaveras – Christian Lacroix
Takeuchi seemed to be a particular fan of Mugler. The artist chose not just one, but three outfits from the fashion brand as inspiration for her characters. And we have to say, she adapted the outfits perfectly to match the characters – they look amazing!
Each dress and change has its own unique flair and charm. Some dresses were more heavily adapted than others, but we think Takeuchi found the perfect blend for the characters.
