4 Non Blonde's classic song "What's Up" and P!nk's "Get the Party Started" are joining Rocket League in celebration of Women's History Month.
It's March, so you know what that means: Women's History Month. Lots of games are celebrating in one way or another, but in much the same way that it celebrated Black History Month back in February, Rocket League is introducing a fantastic selection of player anthems and live events. What's the deal, though? Rocket League has seen the introduction of some great content recently, is Psyonix's take on Women's History Month up to snuff?
In the new collection of songs / Player Anthems, "Behind the Scenes – Linda Perry", takes a number of songs by iconic female musicians and chucks them into Rocket League. The selection is pretty great, especially with the inclusion of 4 Non Blondes' "What's Up" (what a forking banger!), with all Player Anthems available for free through to the end of the month.
In addition to the selection of great tunes, good ol' Athena will be joined by none-other than Linda Perry (lead singer of 4 Non Blondes and the writer of "What's Up") for an Instagram Live event. We're not sure what to expect, seeing as the IG Live was postponed from its original date of March 11 and hasn't yet received a rescheduled date. What we can expect, though, is pure awesome. After all, Athena was our Player of the Month for August 2021, and Linda Perry is a fantastic songwriter, so this could be some top-class entertainment! Here's an excerpt from Psyonix's press release:
With big hats and an even bigger presence, Linda Perry has had a hand in dozens of iconic earworms through the decades. Developing her craft in the San Francisco art scene, Perry skyrocketed into the public eye after penning the alternative smash hit “What's Up?” for her band 4 Non Blondes. Today, the song remains a classic, reaching the massive milestone of 1 billion plays on YouTube.
What Player Anthems Are Coming in "Behind the Scenes – Linda Perry"?
Three different Player Anthems are coming to Rocket League in this year's Women's History Month Bundle. All three of these songs involved Linda Perry in some way or another, hence her featuring in the name of this selection. We'll get into that in a moment, but first, here are those Player Anthems:
- 4 Non Blondes – What's Up
- P!nk – Get the Party Started
- Surfbort – Open Your Eyes
As was detailed in the aforementioned press release, each of these three tracks featured Linda Perry in some way or another. After her work concluded with 4 Non Blondes, Perry "continued to shape the musical world by working with other powerful female artists". This involved work with the likes of P!nk, whom she wrote "Get the Party Started" for. According to Psyonix, "The success of “Get The Party Started” off her sophomore album proved to the world that female empowerment was here to stay".
Regarding "Open Your Eyes" by Surfbort, Psyonix discussed Perry's involvement on their record "Keep on Truckin'", saying the following in regards to this iconic record and song:
From The Ché Café to the stages of Austin, Surfbort’s roots run deep in the DIY scene. It’s an eclectic community where pay-to-play is despised, and drummers are in short supply. But with a couple of lucky breaks and a heaping bucket of talent, Surfbort caught the eye of Perry, who would go on to create a partnership with the band and produce their album “Keep on Truckin’”. Singer Dani Miller continues doing the most just by being her authentic vampire-toothed self, showing the world that gender presentation is forever free to be freaked.
Ultimately, Rocket League is a great game to feature artists like this, especially when you're going for that whole "empowerment" theme. There are few things more empowering than scoring one of those much-wanted goals, and if a song like "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes kicks into high gear when you do so, could you really ask for anything better? No, we didn't think so...
