Amazon officially announced their plans to bring a God of War TV show to its flagship streaming platform, Prime Video. Unfortunately, there isn't much known about it so far, but we do have some updates for you.
On December 14, 2022, Amazon confirmed their plans to create a God of War TV show, via Twitter. On their Prime Video account, they posted a picture of a God of War (2018) poster, along with a text, stating "Prime Video orders 'God of War' Series".
Rumors regarding this already hit the public way back in March 2022, but we still don't know too much about the show. Even after Ragnarök put the franchise back in the public eye, we didn't get more information about the show.
Let's take a look at everything we know about the God of War TV show so far.
God of War TV Show: "Writing Underway" According To Sony
In March 2022, Deadline leaked the info that Amazon was in talks with Sony Interactive Entertainment to bring God of War to the small screen as a show on their flagship streaming service, Prime Video. These rumors were officially confirmed in December 2022, when Prime Video officially announced that they ordered a God of War series.
However, we didn't get any further news back then. Now, during Sony's CES 2024, Katherin Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, announced that they have “writing underway” for the God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn TV shows.
While it's great that production for the show has finally started, we are pretty sure that it won't be released before late 2025. After all, "writing underway" means that they haven't even started casting actors yet, let alone filming.
God of War TV Show: Everything We Know
The previous leak by Deadline also indicated that the God of War show was being made by the creators of The Expanse, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. The Wheel of Time's executive producer, Rafe Judkins, is also said to be involved.
This information appears to be confirmed as well, as multiple sources have now corroborated their involvement in the project. That would be rather exciting news as The Expanse is an incredible, character-driven sci-fi story, and The Wheel of Time... improved over time.
However, we need to temper your excitement a little here. The rumors about Dwayne Johnson starring as Kratos have already been debunked in the past.
But if you look at the budget Amazon have invested into the Rings of Power, we think you can still expect a stellar actor to fill the role. I'm more concerned about sh*t writing, which won't do justice to the source material, as video game adaptations usually suck.
This is everything we know about the God of War TV show so far. Let's just hope the show will turn out as awesome as The Last of Us or the League of Legends show Arcane. Until we get more info, you should make sure to play God of War Ragnarök and check out the latest DLC.
