Call of Duty's smallest maps are always popular. Not because they're well-designed, they often aren't. But when each game launches with a tiny map, the tiny map breaks up play and is just a bit more relaxed and casual. Dome is one of the few exceptions to this. This one might come as a surprise, but not to anyone playing Search and Destroy in 2011. This is one of the best S&D maps of all time, and I will die on that hill. Plus: it also made a great map for the Survival game mode in MW3. | © Activision Blizzard

Whether you loved or hated Modern Warfare 2019, everyone could agree that the map design was weak. On launch, almost no map was popular, but then came Shoothouse. Shoothouse is far and away the best map of that game, and it saved the multiplayer. | © Activision Blizzard
"What?! They've picked something from Ghosts?" Yes, yes I have. Stonehaven was the single best thing to come out of Ghosts, and it deserves a remake. It's a bigger and more asymmetrical map, but it's also vibrant and exciting. And wow is Stonehaven a fantastic map for sniping. | © Activision Blizzard
A dream for close combat. Lots of houses packed close together, and small alleys that invite you to play SMGs or shotguns. Unfortunately, the map has only been remastered once: in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Yuck. | © Activision Blizzard
This is another personal choice, but for S&D players this was the map of World at War; you could always be persuaded to play "just one more" if Upheaval was on the cards. It's a mid-size, urban area with just the perfect balance of cover and sight lines running down the map. Truly a hidden gem. | © Activision Blizzard
A small to medium-sized map built around a crashed helicopter, suitable for almost any game mode. Oh, and yes, you really do feel like a soldier from Black Hawk Down. It also appeared in Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare (2019), and Call of Duty Mobile. | © Activision Blizzard
Intervention heaven. Most of the map is inside the terminal, with a small outdoor area that you can use to get onto an airplane. The map offers an incredible amount of diversity, and we still wonder why it's not in Modern Warfare. There's already an airport in Warzone anyway, and Terminal made it into Modern Warfare 3, Infinite Warfare, and Call of Duty Online. | © Activision Blizzard
The most iconic map of the genre is definitely Nuketown. Another very small map that offers constant action, while still providing relatively safe spawns (unlike Shipment). It also made its way into Black Ops 2, Black Ops 3, Black Ops 4, Call of Duty Online, the current (terrible) Black Ops Cold War, and Call of Duty Mobile. | © Activision
