The Druid Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3 has a problem from his past, and it's called Thaniel. The tiefling boy is missing a part of himself and has been stuck in the Shadowfell region for over a hundred years and it is up to you to help Halsin and the boy.
How To Find Thaniel In Baldur's Gate 3
You can find Thaniel in the Shadowfell region. The Druid Halsin gives you the first hint about the Thiefling boy. Halsin will stay at your camp after you free Emerald Grove from the goblins. If you keep talking with Halsin throughout chapter two, he will tell you about Thaniel as a problem he couldn't solve. You don't know where to find him and whether he is alive, until you talk to a man at the Last Light Inn, in the Shadow cursed lands.
To find Thaniel the most convenient way is to speak with Halsin after waking Art Cullaugh in the Quest: Wake Up Art Cullaugh. The druid will tell you to meet him by the Lakeshore, only a few steps away from the Last Light Inn. At the shore, he will ask you to defend the portal while he tries to rescue Thaniel from the Shadowfell.

How To Defend The Portal
During the encounter, shadow creatures will keep spawning and try to attack the portal. If they manage to destroy the portal, it will close, with no way to return to Halsin. Since the enemies are relatively squishy, you can work well with positioning and AOE attacks. You can also make use of the cleric spell Turn Undead. Therefore, position yourself with Shadowheart close to a larger number of opponents and wait till the turn after you arrive before you cast the spell. With some fortune, you will have a way easier fight afterwards.
After rescuing Thaniel and Halsins return through the portal, all enemies die. Halsin tells you that Thaniel still has a problem and when you talk to Halsin again at the camp he will explain to you that a part of the boy is still lost. He sends you to find an area with floral blooms and marks it on the map (X:76 Y:40).
How To Bring The Missing Part Of Thaniel Back
If you have unlocked it, you can teleport to the Shadowed Battlefield Waypoint. From there it is not far to the House in the Deep Shadows. There you will find Oliver, with whom you might have played hide and seek before.
Now it is up to you to tell Oliver that he is the shadow version of Thaniel and that Thaniel will die if Oliver doesn't return to him. Oliver is not very amused about this news and will flee through a portal. The portal will stay open for you to follow him. Oliver awaits you there in a bubble called Nightdome, sending his family and dog as shadows after you.
When you managed to defeat all of them and destroyed the dome, you can talk to him again. In order to convince Oliver to reunite with Thaniel, you can tell him that he'll always have a companion to play with in Thaniel. Thus, Oliver will become a real boy and disappears. If you now go back to Halsin, he will tell you that Thaniel is recovering after Oliver came back.
When you go to the camp the next time, you can now see Thaniel there and this quest line is finished.
