The DC Universe offers some fantastic movies, but it recently it had a tumultuous time with a new leadership and lots of cancellations. So what can we expect from the DCU in 2023? Here are all the DC movies this year.
The last decade has been everything but easy for DC, watching the biggest competitor Marvel grow massively by building up their Marvel Cinematic Universe. DC, though, struggled heavily copying this way of success, and you just have to compare Justice League to Avengers to see why (to be honest, the Justice League Jack Snyder cut that was released some years later was really okay).
To be fair, DC produced some really outstanding movies as well, naming Joker and The Batman here, but it just wasn't enough to create a franchise that made the audience always hunger for more, like Marvel managed to do it.
So, a lot has happened for DC and there are many open questions concerning the future of their cinematic universe. James Gunn has teased a complete reboot, but that’s still quite a distance away. With that in mind, DC still has some movies to show us next year.
By now, we know about four DC movies planned to air in cinemas in 2023.
DC Movies 2023: Overview And Release Dates
DC Movie | Release Date |
Shazam: Fury of the Gods | March 17, 2023 |
The Flash | June 16, 2023 |
Blue Beetle | August 18, 2023 |
Aquaman and the last Kingdom | December 25, 2023 |
Shazam: Fury Of The Gods (March 17, 2023)
First on our list is Shazam. Seeing Zachary Lewis reprising his role as the titular hero was pretty cool, and many other familiar faces made their return, but to be honest the movie was pretty disappointing.
The villains especially were underwhelming. After all the incredibly captivating villains we were able to enjoy over the years, DC decided to provide us badly written, underpowered & uncool antagonists they could think of.
It feels like a movie written for children, making it actually hard to watch as an adult. This is pretty sad, as there are multiple “kids movies” that adults can still enjoy. It's just that Shazam: Fury of the Gods is not one of them.
The Flash (June 16, 2023)
After almost 9 years, we are finally able to watch the speedy superhero in his own movie, with Ezra Miller in the role of Barry Allen. With all the drama surrounding Ezral Miller, it's a wonder this movie even hit theaters!
As you can see in the trailer, the breaking of time is the theme of this movie, so it's pretty much a rough adaption of the Flashpoint comic storyline .
Simply looking at the movie (not taking into account the drama surrounding it) it's a pretty good movie. It's fun to see the reappearance of Michael Keaton's Batman and despite the CGI being absolutely abysmal, the narrative is pretty well down.
We're not getting into any spoilers here, so who knows what other heroes or villains might appear as the fate of the universe hangs in the balance?
Blue Beetle (August 18, 2023)
Blue Beetle is a very young Latino hero, both in the movie and in our world. He's not really on the same level as Superman, Batman etc. but was an integral part of the younger generation of superheroes , with Robin and the others. Sure, the original character actually dates back to 1939, but has sicne been reimagined in the way we were able to witness in August.
With his debut in 2006 he became a popular character on Young Justice. In the trailer we already got a nice look at the Blue Beetle suit and my goodness does it look good!
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom (December 25, 2023)
So right in time for Christmas DC decided to give us the sequel to this hero, which makes it essentially a Christmas movie. Here is a little Sneak Peek from behind the scenes.
Sadly it was previously delayed multiple times and darkened with everything surrounding Amber Heard, but at the end of the year we’ll finally get to see Jason Momoa’s Aquaman again. Most likely this movie will close the curtain for the current DC movie.
This is everything we know so far. We’ll keep you updated and are looking forward to all the movies DC is going to bring us next year.
