Avatar 2: The Way Of Water has turned out to be an incredible success, ranking among the all-time highest-grossing films. However, the question remains: did it secure the coveted first place?
As it stands, the first Avatar film holds the title of the most successful movie of all time. But with the release of the highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way Of The Water, this might have changed. Not only would surpassing its predecessor be a monumental achievement for James Cameron, but it is also crucial for the film to break even. According to reports, Avatar: The Way Of The Water needs to earn at least $2 billion to be financially successful, placing it in sixth position. However, experts predicted that it had the potential to even reach first place, as the most successful movie of all time.

The Path to Triumph: Avatar 2's Journey to Becoming the Most Successful Film of All Time
The initial weeks often dictate the fate of new movies. If that were always the case here, James Cameron would have had a reason to be concerned about his latest creation. However, films by this accomplished director tend to follow a different trajectory. For instance, while Marvel's Avengers: Endgame raked in $357 million in its first week, Avatar generated a modest $77 million. Yet, we all know that Avatar still made it out on top!

This pattern suggests that James Cameron's movies typically have long-lasting popularity. This was even included in mathematical equations of some “experts”, meant to demonstrate how Avatar 2 could ascend to become the best-selling film of all time. To simplify their findings, let us explain their methodology.
They calculated a multiplier based on the film's performance in the first week relative to other blockbusters. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame achieved a multiplier of 2.41, multiplying its first-week earnings to determine its total gross. Interestingly, James Cameron's films boast an average multiplier of 7.2, because of their long-lasting popularity. By applying this multiplier to Avatar 2's first-week ticket sales, we arrive at the result that Avatar: The Way Of The Water had the potential to become the most successful film of all time.
Well, sadly that isn't quite what happened! Don't get it wrong, Avatar: The Way of Water still made a lot of money! It even became the 3rd highest grossing movie globally, but it didn't quite match the prequels' success across the world.
Still, Avatar 2 managed to become the highest-grossing movie of all-time in France, Germany, Austria, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, New Zealand, Colombia & many more.
So even though it didn't quite live up to the expectations of these so-called “expert's” calculations, it sure made a sh*t-load of money!
