Baldur's Gate 3: Best Origin Characters To Bring In Your Party

Baldur's Gate 3 party comps are important, because without the right balance of strengths and weaknesses you will find the game more difficult, and you won't be able to access as much content. Here is a guide to the best party compositions in BG3 for those who want to keep Origin characters as their written classes.

The best class in Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the Cleric or the Paladin, but we aren't talking about single party members today, we're talking about the best Origin characters to bring in your party. Below, you can find a guide to the best Origin characters to bring depending on your class. We've provided one set of best comps for those who want to keep the Origin characters exactly as they are, and another set of best BG3 party comps for players who are happy to fully respec their party.

For the best party composition in Baldur's Gate 3, we need to cover the following roles:

  • Tank: A character who can take at least some of the damage. Often it's good to have a secondary tank that can do their own role as well as help on the frontline.
  • Support / Control: Even if you go with the potions over magic route, you want someone that can use Healing Word for when characters down. And, this same character (usually a Bard, Druid or Cleric) will also have access to control magic.
  • AoE: The fireball-casters who deal with mobs.
  • Single-target: To round out the party you need someone capable of huge singe-target damage potential. Often a Rogue or Ranger.

In terms of out-of-combat usefulness, there are three big things that can open up more story for you: high Charisma, Speak with Animals, and strong skill proficiencies via either the Bard or Rogue. It's hard to get all three of these bonuses in your party without sacrificing slightly in combat effectiveness. Especially if you don't want to alter Origin characters (Astarion is annoyingly low in Charisma for a Rogue). So we suggest just aiming to get two of those three strengths in your party.

Okay, now let's get to the list of the best Origin characters to bring per class.

Even if you aren't willing to change the class of your companions, we highly recommend re'specing just so you can make the ability scores of your companions more efficient. Also, if you're willing to at least change their sub-class, do so with Shadowheart (Trickery is complete trash compared to other Cleric Domains).
