When you start playing Baldur's Gate 3 you're presented with a big decision right at the start of character create: Would you like to build your own Custom character or play as an Origin character? Here is a guide for you explaining the difference between Origin and Custom characters in BG3, and our recommendation for which to pick.
Baldur's Gate 3 has one of the most overwhelming Character Create menus we've ever seen (you can even pick your genitals). But before you get to pick your Race, Class or Background, the game confronts you with a pretty huge decision: you must decide between playing as a "Custom" or "Origin" character.
We've outlined the differences between Origin and Custom characters below, as well as providing a recommendation for you on which to play. But ultimately, please remember that neither is a bad choice, and there's plenty of enjoyment to be had with both Custom and Origin characters alike.
Note: We won't be discussing Dark Urge characters as these are a kind of hybrid between Origin and Custom, and they aren't recommended for beginners.
The Difference Between Origin & Custom Characters In Baldur's Gate 3
Origin characters in Baldur's Gate 3 have a fixed appearance and a pre-written story, whereas Custom characters are completely invented by the player. With Custom characters you can choose the Race, Class and Background, as well as editing the appearance of the character. Whereas, with Origin characters you don't get to decide any of that or edit the appearance of the character. You can respec the Origin character and change their class later in the game, but not during character create.
"Why the hell would anyone play an Origin character", you may be wondering. The one big advantage Origin characters have over Custom characters is that Origin characters have a ton of bespoke dialogue options and unique quests, whereas Custom characters follow the "standard narrative" of the game. Also, Origin characters are easy and quick because all the character creation has been done for you.
Should You Pick A Custom Or Origin Character In BG3?
We think most players should pick a Custom character, especially because you can collect Origin characters in your party along the way, but the only opportunity to get a Custom character is if you play one yourself. So if you pick a Custom character you get the best of both worlds; you get to enjoy customizing your own character, but you also get to experience the stories of your Origin companions (albeit as more of a spectator).
There are two notable exceptions, however. If you are a brand-new player then choosing an Origin character might be good for you because it's easier. An Origin character might also be preferable if you are playing Baldur's Gate 3 co-op with a friend, because in those situations you won't be feeling and playing like a "main character" anyway.
And there you have it. A brief explanation on the difference between the two types of characters in Baldur's Gate 3. Will you pick an Origin character or a Custom character?
You can do stuff like this no matter which type of character you play as:
