Everyone loves board games, especially at Christmas. But if your particular set has become something of an old family heirloom, you're probably missing quite a few pieces. Allow us to recommend playing video game adaptions of your favorite board games instead. They're infinitely more convenient, and they don't need packing away.

Our Favorite Board Game Video Games On Console

Here are seven great board games that have been adapted for console:

  • Monopoly
  • The Game of Life 2
  • Catan
  • Battleships
  • Uno
  • Scrabble
  • Cluedo

You can find the names of these games as they appear on console below, as well as trailers and links to the various stores.

Note: We've included the RRP of these games in USD. However, regional sales might mean you actually pay less than the RRP at the time of purchase.

Monopoly Plus

Monopoly Plus can be bought a thousand different ways and is available on pretty much everything, so it's no surprise that the game also exists on console. As you can see in the trailer, with this version you get a 3D version of the normal board:

Looks good? Then you'll be pleased to know it's fairly cheap on Xbox and PlayStation:

PlayStation Store

$14.99
Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store$14.99

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo eShop*$39.99

The Switch doesn't have Monopoly Plus, but it does have a game called Monopoly for Nintendo Switch, which is basically the same but sells for 25 dollars more.

The Game of Life 2

Don't be put-off by the fact this is The Game of Life 2 and not just The Game of Life. The sequel only really changes one thing. Whereas before it was just the person who was the richest by the end of the game that won, now the winner is decided by a combination of "Happiness, Knowledge and Wealth".

Here is how the game looks on console:

This is a little more expensive than the others, however.

$29.99
Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store$23.99

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo eShop$29.99

The Xbox version is slightly cheaper.

Catan

Catan is an excellent board game, probably one of the best of the last fifty years, and it's just as fun on console. As you can see, they've brought the map alive with a few cool animations:

Admittedly, it isn't the flashiest adaption on the list, but it is cheap on all three platforms.

Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store$16.99

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo eShop $19.99

The Switch version is a little more expensive.

Battleships

Battleships is an absolutely classic board game, and Ubisoft did a stellar job bringing it to console:

Unlike other games on this list, the devs actually added a quite compelling new mode to this adaption, so you get more than just a digital version of the board game.

Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store14.99

Nintendo Switch

Destroying an enemy ship is far more satisfying in this version of the game.

UNO

This is a weird one because in the console version of UNO you can only play co-op with a local player against the AI, rather than doing classic UNO. However, the co-op mode works really well, so it's earned a place on our list.

Here is the trailer for UNO on console:

And, you'll be pleased to learn, it's fairly cheap.

PlayStation Store

Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store$9.99

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo eShop$9.99

For once, the Switch version costs the same as the other platforms.

Scrabble

Unlike UNO, you can do local multiplayer against each other in this game thanks to pass and play. However, that is the only mode we recommend. The online mode is horribly inconsistent and is dominated by players using spell checkers.

The Scrabble trailer:

This game is also quite reasonably priced.

Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XXbox Store $14.99

Nintendo Switch

*The Switch doesn't have Scrabble, but it does have an off-brand alternative called Happy Words, which is slightly cheaper.

Cluedo

Cluedo is one of the games that benefits the most from fancy new animations and 3D characters, as it makes getting into the RP of a murder mystery easier. They've also updated the characters to be more reflective of a 2023 audience:

There's a weird amount of add-on content for this game, but we recommend just ignoring that stuff and getting the base game.
