According to Blizzard itself, cheating in Overwatch 2 is still a major issue. Since the FPS shooter was released in October 2022, the number of suspended cheaters has gone up to over 100,000. Despite the introduction of a new defence system a few months ago, it seems that the problem is still far from being eliminated. To ensure that Overwatch 2 is played fairly in the future, Blizzard really needs to tighten their rules now.

Over 100,000 Cheaters Suspended Since Overwatch 2 Launch

In a recent blog post, Blizzard shared some details about an update to the Defence Matrix Initiative, which they are using to tackle disruptive behavior and cheating in Overwatch 2. It was confirmed that over 100,000 accounts had to be banned for using unauthorized hacks or hardware that gave them an unfair advantage.

A little over two months ago, Blizzard posted a similar article stating that they had to ban 50,000 players.... Considering that they were going to take more drastic measures against cheaters back then, it seems like their "measures" didn't really solve the problem, as the number simply doubled. But what is next? How will Blizzard solve this problem once and for all?

These efforts to stop hacks also include regularly issued ban waves against cheaters, often banning up to 5,000 accounts every week. We also recently issued a significant ban wave targeting popular and widely used hacks. We’ve also taken steps to directly confront unauthorized hacks and prevent them from ever being used in Overwatch 2.

With Season 4 starting, players must be more cautious when forming groups. Not only will cheaters face suspension from Overwatch 2 if reported, but also those who frequently join groups with them. Being part of a cheater's group, even without actively cheating yourself, still grants the advantage of winning matches and earning more XP.
