GTA 6 Will Break With Series Tradition

A recent report confirmed that GTA 6 will have a female protagonist for the first time in the series, breaking with a long-standing tradition in the Grand Theft Auto series.

It has been rumored for a long time, now it seems all but confirmed: GTA 6 will have a female protagonist. This was claimed by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, one of the most reliable sources on insider info in the gaming industry. In the past, many leaks and rumors by people including the likes of Tom Henderson, have claimed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will have a playable female character. The latest story by Schreier now pretty much confirms it.

GTA 6 Will Start A New Era For The Series

In his report, Schreier claims that the game will have two protagonists, one male and one female. Their story is allegedly based on the famous criminal couple Bonnie and Clyde, suggesting that the two protagonists could also be a couple in some fashion. Not much else has been revealed on either character, except that the woman is supposed to be Latina.

This female protagonist is going to be the very first playable woman in the GTA series. Outside of GTA Online of course, where you are able to play as anything you like by now. Not even the spin-offs ever had a crack at having a protagonist who isn't a man rampaging the streets of fictionalized America.

After having gone through a tumultuous time, which saw the company culture change drastically, the developers at Rockstar Games think they are ready to try it out for the first time. Schreier raises a valid point in describing this change in perspective and how much of a left turn it is for the series:

Moves like these once seemed unthinkable for a company whose best-selling franchise is a satirical depiction of America that involves playing gangsters who kill civilians and where women are mostly depicted as sex objects.

Obviously GTA is infamous for its problematic portrayal of women in the series. But they have shown in their most recent game, Red Dead Redemption 2, that they can write interesting, well-developed female characters with agency and depth. Sadie Adler for example, is one of the strongest characters Rockstar has ever written, and people still are clamoring for a Sadie DLC. Let's see if they can continue this development with GTA 6.

Actress Of Female Protagonist Might Have Been Revealed

People on the internet have found a hint on who might be the voice actress portraying the female protagonist in GTA 6. Actress and dancer Natonia Monet added a voice acting role for a character named Tamara in a game called "Fireball", with Rockstar Games being cited as the developers. She has since removed that entry, leading people to speculate that "Fireball" is actually GTA 6 and that she could be in the game.

Whether that is true and Tamara is actually the protagonist, or just another character in the story, is unclear as yet. GTA 6 is most likely slated for a release date around 2024 or 2025, so we still have to wait awhile to actually get the game in our hands.
