Minecraft is getting a Star Wars DLC soon! Here's all we know about it so far.
I'll skip the preamble this time, just assume you're familiar with the best-selling game of all time Minecraft (which everyone's little sibling and/or child has probably annoyed into playing with them already) and get right to the point: Minecraft developers Mojang have announced a DLC collaboration with everyone's favorite space fantasy franchise Star Wars that'sset to be released this November 7.
The DLC was revealed at this year's MineCon, along with a short teaser trailer showing off some familiar Star Wars locales and characters in the signature Minecraft style such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu and General Grievous. It also includes blocky lightsabers, characters using Force powers and many more bits of classic Star Wars iconography. How any of it is going to fit into Minecraft is still a bit of a mystery, however.
Minecraft x Star Wars: A Minecraft Expansion Or A Star Wars Campaign?
A post on the official Star Wars blog (did you know that there's an official Star Wars blog?) went live shortly after the announcement, offering some, but not many, answers. It calls the DLC "[...]a new story-based adventure[...]", making it likely that this DLC will be separate from the main Survival and Creative game modes. The post then elaborates on the DLC campaign's content:
In Path of the Jedi, you’ll play as a Padawan, customize your own droid, and build a lightsaber as you go on various missions throughout the galaxy. Throughout, you’ll encounter legends like Yoda and Mace Windu as you rise to the rank of Jedi Knight.
It does not mention whether players will be able to use any of the items or blocks from the DLC in the regular modes, but a Minecraft collaboration with Star Wars that doesn't let its players get creative with Star Wars props would be a wasted opportunity, wouldn't it?
Plus, the whole collaboration would be a bit strange otherwise — Minecraft is hardly what I would call the best medium to tell a story. Either way, in order to experience the DLC you'll need the latest version of Minecraft , specifically the Bedrock Edition (i.e. the cross-platform one).
We'll know more once the DLC is released on November 7 — which isn't too far off, actually! At that time you can be sure that we'll be covering it here.
