Masahiro Saukurai is the legend responsible for allowing nerds everywhere to smash. Now, the mastermind behind the ultimate platform fighter seems to be working on a new game. So far, it is unclear whether the game is a Smash sequel, or a different genre altogether. What we do know, is that Sakurai has worked on Kirby and Kid Icarus in the past, so fighting games are not his only credentials.

New Game From Smash Bros Director

The tease was revealed by Famitsu, who posted it on their Twitter:

The tease came as part of an acceptance speech: Sakurai won Famitsu's Most Valuable Creator Award. In the acceptance speech, Sakurai was asked about why he's been so quiet lately, and the man implied that he's working hard on something new. Here's the official translation of the tweet above, courtesy of Kody Nokolo:

Sakurai gave some remarks on winning Famitsu's Most Valuable Creator Award,. Though he's been silent, he's been working on something. His eyes might be a little tired after it. He thinks of the award as one for Smash Ultimate's staff and contributors since it's all thanks to them!

Obviously, a new Smash game is the likeliest candidate: There is no way that there won't be another, and Sakurai would be the most logical person to lead the charge, considering how successful he's been with the series. Especially now that platform fighters are popping up everywhere, there is no doubt that Smash will get its new installment soon, so I'll say it with my chest here: The new game Sakurai is working on, is a new Smash game.
